SALEM - Salem coach Rob Pike has been living with a "next man up" mentality with his running backs all season.

Injuries have forced new, unexpected faces like Brandon Wall, Will Michaud and Jackson Burns to step into prominent roles in the backfield.

But big 6-foot, 195-pound Dom Paci has been the consistent rock the Blue Devils have relied upon most.

Saturday, the senior co-captian chewed up 131 yards on just 11 carries and scored three touchdowns, leading Salem to a comfortable 35-19 victory over Timberlane on Homecoming Day.

"We have JV kids coming up to play running back and all throughout the week I'm coaching them up," said Paci. "We have kids who don't play running back, like Will Michaud, who stepped up last week. So now he's a running back. I'm just trying to teach them and bring them up."

Paci showed off his versatility in spades.

He did what he does best, running for power up the middle, showcased his speed when he got in the open field and put his strength on display with some massive stiff arms that looked like a man tossing a child.

"I was feeling electric out there," smiled Paci.

The senior opened the scoring on 27-yard TD on the first drive of the game, getting Salem (3-1) to a lead it wouldn't surrender. After a stop on defense, the newly-converted back Michaud finished the Blue Devils' next drive on a 1-yard plunge.

Timberlane (0-4) fought back on its ensuing drive when Cody Fleming burst to the outside and cashed in a 10-yard TD run, but it took just three plays for Salem to respond on a Paci 10-yard TD.

Just before half, senior quarterback Kyle Poulin hit Andrew Ference, who made a nice over-the-shoulder grab, for a 13-yard TD to make it 28-7 at the break.

Paci put the game away early in the third quarter when his third TD made it 35-7.

"It's awesome," said Pike. "He's really been a starter for three years. He started a handful of games as a sophomore. He was obviously great last year, and he ran really hard today. He was good."

For a converted back, Michaud was an efficient 6-96 on the ground with a TD. Junior Brandon Wall completed Salem's three-headed monster in the backfield, piling up 80 yards on just eight carries.

Timberlane scored on the last play of the third quarter when QB Dan Hayes ran in for a 5-yard keeper, then late in the fourth when backup QB Jared Morrison barreled his way in from a yard out.

Hayes was a bright spot for the Owls. He rushed for a team-high 58 yards on 14 carries and also was 13 of 21 passing for 142 yards. He left midway through the fourth quarter with apparent cramps and did not return.

But the Salem defense, led by Jordan Labossiere, Zach Gibbons and Michaud, made life difficult for the Owls all game.

Up next for the Blue Devils is a huge showdown at Pinkerton Friday night at 7 p.m.

"We were all focused on this game," said Pike. "I know (Timberlane) is 0-4, but they're not that bad of a team. They've got some tough kids and they're well coached.

"No, I don't think we were looking past this game at all. The guys have to take care of business and they know that. They can't take any games off."

GIBBONS NOW SECOND ALL-TIME

On his fourth PAT of the game, Salem senior kicker Zach Gibbons passed Ben Lawlor (Class of ‘07) for the second-most extra points in school history according to Salem history teacher Bernie W. Campbell.

Lawlor had 88 career PATs. After Saturday, Gibbons is at 90.

"He's automatic," said Salem coach Rob Pike. "He's a great kickoff guy, too. I know he doesn't get touchbacks, but he puts it where we want him to, with height and accuracy.

"Having him as our kicker is awesome. He is a luxury, and one that you don't often have in high school."
