MANCHESTER, N.H. — Two quarters of strenuous work, a 27-point, seven-minute barrage and one step closer to the heart of the 2008 football schedule.

Brian O’Reilly and his Pinkerton Astros left the Queen City with a solid sense of satisfaction, polishing off Manchester West before the snack-bar hot cocoa had a chance to simmer, 34-13, last night.

“I was worried before the game, because we’re missing two key defensive linemen and I truly, truly felt that we were undersized up front and that we could have a long night,” said O’Reilly. “Without Ben Proulx in there and without Zach Tulley, I was very concerned. That’s two of our better defensive linemen.

“I was actually very pleased with the way we played defense through the first half (only 49 yards allowed) and pretty much stopped them.”

Eric Guinto raced to second-quarter TDs of 5, 2 and 20 yards, and Colton Desmarais scooped up the loose change from a Mike Mazzola/Ali Bahremand sack, and walked in with a six-yard fumble return for a fourth Astro score.

West, now 0-3, had no chance.

Guinto, now with six TDs on the year, led 11 different Pinkerton ball carriers with 70 yards on 12 hard-nosed rushes.

“We came out hard,” said Guinto. “Usually, there are some big plays, tonight we just pounded.”

Senior fullback and captain Chris George looked strong in his first action of the year with 37 yards on eight carries. Quarterback Ryan Simpson efficiently hit 3 of 5 passes for 66 yards and had a perfectly-thrown TD bomb slide right through Guinto’s hands, about the only Pinkerton miscue on the night.

With Guinto done for the night and O’Reilly subbing liberally after halftime, Christian Diaz helped push the bulge to 34-0 in the third before the Astro reserves surrendered a pair of meaningless scores.

“We’ve got so many injuries right now, every week it’s like another guy, another guy, another guy. We’ve just got to get healthy first,” said O’Reilly, whose club has rebounded from the opening night disappointment with Division 2 champ Bishop Guertin with back-to-back blowouts.

“Now we’ve got a stretch of games coming up with Salem, Londonderry, Concord, Brockton. We’re missing a couple of key people, we’re a little limited. We did what we had to do, but there is room for improvement, especially on offense.”
