BROCKTON — Pinkerton caught fire early, but fizzled out late last night.
“We had complete control of the game at halftime,” coach Brian O’Reilly said after his Astros fell to Brockton, 28-27, at Marciano Stadium. “We were doing fine.”
Then came the onslaught. The Boxers scored 21 unanswered points over the final two quarters to overcome what had been a 27-7 Pinkerton lead at the half. Two interceptions and a late fumble ended any hopes of an Astros victory.
Pinkerton caught a tough break right off the bat. Junior running back Eric Guinto, who returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, was done for the night after injuring his shoulder on his third offensive carry.
Leading 27-21 late in the fourth, Pinkerton fumbled the ball at its own 39-yard line. Two plays later, Brockton's Khalil James-Offley (183 yards) put an exclamation point on a huge night, ripping off a 37-yard touchdown run with 2:57 remaining. On the ensuing drive, the Astros' fate was sealed when the Boxers intercepted a Ryan Simpson pass.
Senior Matt Mangano played well, catching a 33-yard touchdown pass from Simpson and scoring on a 6-yard scamper.
"The effort was there," O'Reilly said. "It was a good test for our kids against a good team."
