WEST ANDOVER — To pick up its second win on the season, Greater Lawrence went back to the basics delivering punishing hits and a 35-8 win over West Roxbury, yesterday afternoon.

Reggies head coach Tony Sarkis was understandably pleased with his squad’s performance. “This was a breakout game for us, both offensively and defensively. We’re starting to play Reggie football now and it shows.”

Greater Lawrence looked sharp right out of the gates as Wadscar Gomez took his first carry 75 yards to put the Reggies out in front just 30 seconds into the game. Greater Lawrence quarterback Juan Carlos Gomez flipped a toss to Wadscar who bounced around the outside and went untouched to the goal line.

Wadscar went on to find the end zone three more times during the afternoon. His four scores tripled his figures for the season; Gomez has six touchdowns for 36 points this year, a number which will undoubtedly improve as the season continues.

“Wadscar’s getting better and better each week, which is great to see as a coach,” said Sarkis. “He’s hitting the holes hard and protecting the ball with both hands when he gets hit.”

West Roxbury (1-6), already struggling to keep up with the rolling Reggies, were hurt time and again by penalties. In total, they were flagged five times for 37 yards, including a face mask call that turned a Greater Lawrence turnover into a first down and a holding penalty that called back a pass deep into Reggie territory.

Gomez’ performance set the tone for his teammates and the Reggies’ defense locked the field up tight, holding West Roxbury (1-6) to just 46 yards in the first three quarters.

Bone-crushing hits and team-tackles were the trademarks of the Greater Lawrence defense.

“We’ve got 11 guys on the ball every play and we’re hitting hard. You can’t ask for anything more,” Sarkis said of his defense.

A constant backfield presence by the Reggies left West Roxbury quarterback Kevin Herbert vulnerable and crippled his ability to throw the ball. Herbert was sacked just once for a loss of three yards, but the constant threat of a blistering Reggie tackle took his focus off his receivers.

When Jose “Bam Bam” Sanchez wrapped Herbert up late in the second quarter, the lanky QB had no choice but to snap off a lazy floater gobbled up by Greater Lawrence junior defensive tackle Miguel Baiz. Herbert was intercepted again in the game’s closing seconds when Dayram Berguellch scooped up a tipped pass over the middle.

Juan Olivo, Baiz and Angel Rivera delivered stop after stop at the line of scrimmage for the Reggies, and junior Anthony Ocasio absolutely hammered any Raider unfortunate enough to cross his path. When West Roxbury’s Dequan Phillips slipped through a hole in the line and turned upfield, Ocasio lined him up and leveled him with a crushing tackle.

With the win, the Reggies advanced to 2-5 overall (0-1 CAC) and hope to take that momentum into next week’s Commonwealth Conference match-up with Lynn Tech.
