LAWRENCE — Ramon Heredia had a message for teammate Alex Andrews.
“I told him that if he touches the ball on the opening kickoff, he better bring it to the house for six points,” said the senior quarterback. “We talked about it all week. He told me that if he was out there, he’d bring the kick back for a touchdown. And he did.”
Andrews took the opening kick, sprinted to his left and ran it 87-yards for the score that set the tone for the Lancers’ 39-0 victory over Greater Lawrence in the pre-Thanksgiving Day contest last night.
“We were talking about it over the weekend and I said if I came back I would have to come back hard,” said Andrews. “It was going to Francis (Nova), but I said, ‘I have to have this one.’ It felt great. I think it got us going.”
Andrews added the second score of the game, a 24-yard run, as Lawrence grabbed a 33-0 lead going into halftime.
“It was a really emotional game,” said Lancers lineman Pedro Cruz. “They are our rivals, so to beat them is special. We’ve been together a long time. Two years ago they beat us, and it was the worst Thanksgiving of my life. I can eat good tomorrow.”
Heredia needed to throw only nine times, completing five for 126 yards. Three of those completions were touchdowns, to Mike Calzetta (38 yards), Demitri Brown (52 yards) and Julio Valentin (15 yards). Heredia, who played just one series in the second half, finished his senior season with 1,648 yards and 14 touchdowns passing.
Brown’s touchdown grab was the 100th catch of his stellar varsity career. It put him in an exclusive class of Lawrence receivers that have reached the century mark.
Harvey Blanco notched the Lancers’ final score, a 4-yard run just 18 seconds into the second half off a turnover. Andrews rushed twice for a team-best 55 yards and sophomore Miguel Rodriguez carried nine times for 46 yards.
Donea Robinson made a team-high eight tackles while Cruz made six tackles and a sack and Steven Mannion and Jorge Escoto each had five stops. Nick Elwell and Valentin each picked off a pass.
Greater Lawrence’s Wadscar Gomez closed out his senior season in style, carrying 28 times for a game-high 102 yards. After not carrying once in the first three games of the season, Gomez finished his senior season with 1,059 yards.
“He had an excellent game,” said Reggies coach Tony Sarkis. “He reached 1,000 yards after missing three games. I am so proud of what he did this season.”
Juan Olivo led Greater Lawrence with six tackles and Saul Orellana and Angel Rivera each had four stops.
“It’s been a great four years,” said Heredia. “It means a lot to be leaving the team like this. It gives the younger kids something positive for the future.”
