BYFIELD - Like most of his Lawrence High teammates, Ramon Heredia was by no means immune to the stumble on the mudbog that was Triton's home football field last night.

At some point, though, big-play ability and talent somehow got Heredia and the Lancers over the hump, 19-15, at Triton.

In moving to 5-4 and finishing out its final season in the Cape Ann League large division at 3-2, Lawrence overcame a fumble, an interception, a listless start and most importantly a laundry basket full of yellow flags.

Ten Lawrence penalties for 95 yards helped keep scrappy Triton in the mix, but in the end, it was the nifty Heredia, top targets Mike Calzetta and Demetri Brown, and starting fullback/fourth-string tailback Harvey Blanco, who helped compile just enough offense to survive and escape.

"The good part about it is we finish 3-2 in the Cape Ann Large, and we haven't had a winning record there," said Lancer coach Mike Yameen. "It's the same problem we've been through. We get up, we've got to finish, and we just don't."

Like the victories over Wilmington and North Andover, Lawrence built a two-score lead in the fourth, only to watch it nearly disappear in the final seconds.

Heredia's third rushing TD of the night put Lawrence up 19-7 with just over nine minutes left.

"We score and our defense takes a series off," said Yameen, who watched Triton move right down the field take make it 19-15 at the 4:30 mark.

The hosts even stopped Lawrence late, forcing a punt with 81 seconds to play. With the game on the line, it was Donea Robinson and the Lancer defense, who finally landed the knockout.

Robinson, a senior linebacker, capped an amazing 15-tackle performance - four for losses - with a game-clinching interception in the final minute.

"We had to win this game," said Blanco, a junior, who complemented Robinson nicely with eight tackles of his own. "Somehow, we had to finish, and the seniors definitely took a lead role. We did it."

Blanco, seeing the football more than he'd seen all year,  more than doubled his ground output with 10 carries for 78 yards on the night.

"Yeah, it feels pretty good to run the ball a little," said Blanco, the fourth Lancer to take the lead back role this year following Devin Montanez, Anthony DeJesus and Francis Nova. "But we have a good running back crew and I like blocking anyways."

It was the senior Heredia, though, who efficiently dissected the Vikes in a 10 for 18, 185-yard night. All three of his TD runs were highlight variety, leaving at least a couple Triton defenders face first in his slop-caked wake.

Calzetta, who now has 33 catches for 395 yards, led the Lawrence receiving corps with four grabs for 75 yards. Brown and Anthony DeJesus each caught a pair of passes, combining for 92 yards.

With a shot to go 7-4 on the year, Lawrence next faces Haverhill before the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving battle with Greater Lawrence Tech.
