ANDOVER — The chance was there for Andover. But it could not take advantage.

The Golden Warriors drove to the Lowell 6-yard line with 25 seconds remaining in the game. But a botched snap and three incomplete passes later, Andover fell to the Red Raiders 27-20 last night.

“We had our shot at the end,” said Golden Warriors coach Ken Maglio. “But throughout the game we had a few breakdowns, and they cost us.”

Lowell took the touchdown lead with 3:45 left in regulation on a 2-yard run by Ambruce Carter on fourth down.

But Chris McConnell gave Andover some momentum back with a 34-yard kickoff return. The Golden Warriors then took off on a 17-play drive, the biggest play a 15-yard pass from John Hennessy to Ryan Peek. But an errant shotgun exchange caused Hennessy to lose 14 yards, and the QB had to spike the ball on second down to stop the clock. The final two passes fell incomplete to end the game.

“Both the offense and defense are very inconsistent right now,” said Maglio. “They played well at times, but other times made mistakes they shouldn’t be making. We need to get together on a few things.”

After managing only 39 yards through the first half, Hennessy hit McConnell on a 55-yard pass with 1.8 seconds remaining before the break. A play later, the two connected on a 5-yard touchdown to make it 14-14.

The Golden Warriors again struggled in the third, gaining only 26 yards. But Hennessy was 7 of 11 for 92 yards and a score in the fourth quarter prior to the final four plays.

Brian Miller caught four passes for 70 yards and a 5-yard touchdown. McConnell finished with three grabs for 66 yards.

Andover linebacker Nick Enxing made a pair of first-half interceptions, the first of which he ran back for a 35-yard touchdown to give his team the lead. He also made nine tackles. Ned Deane entered the game after starting linebacker Steven LaFortune left with an injury, and turned in a team-high 13 tackles. Andrew Lebowitz made 10 tackles and Jake Lebowitz and Craig Hornung each made eight stops.

The Golden Warriors held Kyle Edwards to just 5-of-13 passing, but one was a 45-yard bomb to set up their first score with 1:10 left in the half. They then recovered an on-side kick, and scored again with 10 seconds left.

In addition to losing LaFortune, Andover also was without starting offensive tackle Kristofer Riemer for most of the game after he went down with an injury.
