Raiders win state dual tourney

Mike Glynn doesn't mind the pressure situations. In fact, he relishes them.

The Central Catholic sophomore 106-pounder demonstrated that Saturday afternoon as he help the Raiders win their first-ever Division 2 dual-meet state title, beating a talented North Attleboro team (21-2) in the finals, 36-30.

Glynn had three pins on the day to improve to 37-2. His pin in the semifinals clinched a 36-34  win over Plymouth South and his pin in the finals tied the match, 30-30, setting up dramatic wins by Greg Spero at 113 and Nate Vachon at 120.

"I always like going out there when the team needs me," said Glynn, whose older brother Tyler also had three pins at 126 pounds. "I'm always confident, but I'm more confident this year. I have more strength than last year (when he had to wrestle 113)."

Against North Attleboro, the No. 1 seed whose only previous setback was to Vermont power Mount Anthony, Spero followed Glynn by breaking a 4-4 tie in the closing seconds and then Vachon captured a 12-8 decision for his third win of the day to end the meet.

Earlier in the meet, Mando Binet had a huge win at 170 pounds, getting a takedown at the end for a 10-8 decision. Joey Sanches (145) and Matt Shaw (152) were both 3-0 on the day.

"It was a great team performance," said Central coach Jamie Durkin, whose team improved to 18-2. "Now we'll go after Methuen."

The Raiders will host Methuen Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. They can earn a share of the MVC title if they can defeat the unbeaten Rangers.
