WEST ANDOVER — With the wind chill, it was about 15 degrees Friday night, but it didn’t seem to bother Greater Lawrence junior Ader Mezidor.
Mezidor eclipsed 100 yards for the first time this season, finishing with 130 yards on 15 carries, and scored two touchdowns to pace the Reggies to a convincing 48-19 victory over Boston Latin Academy.
“It (the cold) wasn’t too bad, it didn’t bother me,” said Mezidor. “It was kind of fun.”
Mezidor scored on runs of 12 and 39 yards in the first half. The Reggies surged to a 30-13 halftime lead, aided by a 45-yard pass play from Marc Travers to Donnie Croteau and the first of two TD runs by senior David White.
“He (Mezidor) is getting better and better,” said Greater Lawrence coach Tony Sarkis. “He’s an athlete learning how to be a football player and he’s learning.”
Comfortably ahead at halftime, the Reggies scored twice more in the second half before the reserves finished the game. First, Jose Caceres took a screen pass from Travers and zoomed 58 yards for a touchdown and then White scored on a 6-yard run.
With White, who also had eight tackles on defense, adding 91 yards on 16 carries, the Greater Lawrence starters rushed for 232 yards.
“I was happy with the offense, the execution was pretty good,” said Sarkis, who braved the conditions in his traditional shorts. “But we need to clean up some things on defense and do a better job there.”
The win improved Greater Lawrence to 6-4 and could put it in the State Vocational Bowl large school semifinals, which would be played Thursday. The Reggies will find out Sunday if they qualified.
“With Thanksgiving the next week, it makes it tough to play again so soon,” said Sarkis. “But the kids want to play so I’m for it if they are.”
