NORTH READING — Alex D'Ambrosio kicked an 18-yard field goal with no time on the clock to give North Reading a 17-14 win over Wayland in the first round of the Division 4 North tournament Friday night.
With the score tied 14-14 and 20 seconds remaining, North Reading ran one more play expecting to stop the clock to attempt the kick. Unfortunately, due to a scoreboard malfunction, the official time was being kept by the officials, and when the play was over, it turned out that the clock had already hit 0:00.
Luckily, there was a penalty on the Wayland defense, giving North Reading an untimed down and an opportunity to make the game-winning kick.
North Reading scored its first touchdown in the second quarter on a 3-yard run by Jake Bedell. Wayland responded with scores in the third and fourth quarter, and the Hornets got an 18-yard TD from Ryan Edison.
Bedell led North Reading (6-2) with 190 yards rushing on 27 carries. North Reading will advance to face No. 1 seeded Melrose in the semifinals next Friday at 7 p.m.
