HAVERHILL - All Kyle Bellemore wants to do is win, and for the past two weeks that's exactly what his Haverhill team has done.

Saturday afternoon, the senior tri-captain anchored a Hillie defense that completely swallowed up winless Malden, overcoming some offensive woes in the first half to take a 21-0 victory.

"We just need to keep winning," said Bellemore, whose Hillies moved to 2-6. "We've been working hard in practice and we really just want to end the season strong."

Malden (0-8) struggled to do much of anything against the Haverhill defense. The Golden Tornadoes mustered just 62 yards of total offense the entire game, getting just two first downs on the day - both of which came in the first half.

Six Malden possessions in the second half each ended in a three-and-out.

Brandon Grundy, Demitres Quezada, Ryan McCarthy and Joseph Estradious anchored a defense line that made five tackles for loss and two sacks. Malden's longest rush of the day was 13 yards, which was one of just two plays that went for more than 10 yards.

Besides Bellemore, linebackers Owen Keegan, Hunter Prescott and Joseph Santoro all made plays at the line of scrimmage.

"We worked hard in practice and worked on stopping their best players," said Bellemore. "We knew that if we could contain them on the inside we would be fine."

Added Haverhill coach Tim O'Connor: "We have a defense that has 10 underclassmen, but we've started to gel together and play solid football."

It was a tough start offensively for Haverhill Saturday afternoon, and things went from bad to worse right before the half.

Haverhill had a first-and-goal with 90 seconds left in the half, but fumbled at the 1-yard-line. The Hillies got one more opportunity after a stop on defense and again drove down to the 1-yard-line, but incredibly fumbled yet again to keep it a scoreless game at the break.

"We just said that we need to step up the offense at halftime," said Bellemore. "That was pretty embarrassing in the first half because we had so many chances and the defense had to pick us up."

The offense finally finished a drive midway through the third when Bellemore capped off a three-play, 45-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Ayden Alvarado broke a 19-yard touchdown run early in the fourth, and on Haverhill's next drive QB Brady Skafas hit Dante Cadeus on a 22-yard TD pass.

While the season has been a rebuilding one, the improved play of the underclassmen are hopeful signs for Haverhill.

"Beginning the year we divided the season into a first half and a second half," said O'Connor. "We knew the first half was going to be difficult with 22 new starters. We're just hoping to set the foundation for next year and build off of that to come back as the Haverhill we've known for the past few years.

"But our goal is still to win out and win on Thanksgiving."
