Everything seemed to be going wrong for the Pelham softball team Wednesday in the Division 2 opening round — until the seventh inning.
Trailing underdog John Stark 5-3 in the seventh, thanks largely to four errors that led to four unearned runs, the No. 3-seed Pythons scored five runs with two outs to escape with an 8-6 victory.
Senior standout Sarah Ratcliffe was the final hero, slugging a walkoff three-run homer to end the game. She finished with four RBIS, but she was hardly the only hitting star for the Pythons.
Freshman Jess Slaton was 4 for 4 with two doubles and scored twice and junior Madison Burke was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI and had a ket hit in the seventh.
"We were lucky to pull it out, but we'll take it,: said Pelham coach Todd Lozeau.
Pelham (14-3) will now host Pembroke at 5 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.
