MALDEN — In Saturday's MIAA Division 4 North tournament showdown between Mystic Valley and Georgetown, it took until the second have for someone to run away with it.

And that's literally what the Eagles did, churning up rushing yards in the second half to defeat the Royals 26-8 at Malden Catholic.
"They fought for 44 minutes," said Royals (3-4) coach Eric McCarthy of his team. "They came out and got that last score which was good to see. Credit Mystic Valley for how they showed up and played physical and they deserved to win this game."
With the score just 6-0 at half, the Eagles (6-2) came out in the third quarter with a somewhat unbalanced but successful game plan - get quarterback Phillipe Guerrier and running back James LoChirco the ball.
After a Royals' (3-4) turnover on downs to start the half, working with a short field, the Eagles capped their next with a 2-yard LoChirco touchdown and a Guerrier two point conversion to make it 14-0.
LoChirco did it again on the next possession, going 27 yards for a score to make it 20-0 after the two-point conversion.
And, for the coup de grace, Guerrier busted a 66-yard touchdown run with under five to go to make it 26-0 at the time.
LoChirco finished with 65 yards on 13 carries and two scores, while Guerrier had 160 yards on 14 carries and and two touchdowns of his own.
Guerrier was also 6-of-21 for 109 yards through the air.
"We just decided we wanted to get Phillipe going running the football," said Eagles coach Craig Turner. "That was our game plan in the second half to get four going in the running game then James (LoChirco), he's a tough, physical player. Offensive line really carried the day for us."
The Royals' lone score came with 1:43 to go, when Tommy Long hit Hunter Lane on 4th and goal from five yards out and then hit Cam Barnard for the two-point conversion to make it 26-8.
"Our defense was phenomenal," said Turner. "We have an absolutely phenomenal middle linebacker (LoChirco), so that helps."
Long was 4-for-16 for eight yards and one touchdown while being picked off by Jack Ryan of the Eagles twice.
The Royals' scoring drive was engineered by hard running from Mark Mansfield, who ended up with 91 yards on 20 carries.
"It was good to see the whole team show some pride at the end, somewhere to build on," said McCarthy. "Still a lot of talent on this team."
The visitors' defense battled hard in the first half, holding the Eagles to six points from a Guerrier 13-yard touchdown.
Zach Beauvais, Dan Lavelle and others played well, making plenty of tackles, while Jimmy Sherman had an interception in the contest.
"Defense has been solid all season," said McCarthy. "I think we missed a couple of reads in terms of what we key on there with some of the option stuff, but they fought hard."
McCarthy said the team will have to clean up its mistakes moving forward including fumbles, interceptions and missed execution, but he was proud of the way his guys battled.
"We got to get back to work on Monday and show some pride during the week so we can finish out," said McCarthy. "This is something to build on with this team and we're trying to continue to get better as we're moving forward."
