LOWELL — This will be a game that North Andover will want to forget as quickly as possible.

After two non-playoff wins against Lynn Classical and Lynn English, the Scarlet Knights got an MVC matchup against rival Lowell.

The Red Raiders got a fantastic performance from quarterback Dan Smith, who went 13 for 16 passing for 185 yards and five touchdowns, four to his favorite target Keith Lynch, and also ran for another score as Lowell took it to North Andover in a 65-22 blowout.

"Their quarterback is very good and so are their backs and receivers," said North Andover coach John Dubzinski. "We had our struggles on defense. We couldn't stop anything inside or on the outside. They just had a great game plan and exposed our weaknesses."

After the two teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter, Lowell (4-6 ) exploded for 30 points in the second. Smith threw all four touchdown passes to Lynch in the quarter, getting help from a Knights fumble and interception.

North Andover (4-6) cut the deficit to 30-16 when Darren Watson scored on a 1-yard run with a minute left in the first half. The Knights, who deferred on the coin toss, could have coupled the late touchdown with a score on the first drive of the second half to swing the momentum, but Lowell drove downfield in less than a minute which set up Smith's fourth TD pass to Lynch as time expired.

Down 37-16 at the half, North Andover fumbled on the opening drive of the third quarter, and three plays later Smith hit Ajay Proeung for a 33-yard score to essentially ice the game.

Watson was one of the few bright spots for North Andover. He rushed for 193 yards on 21 carries, and had all of the Knights points with his three touchdown runs. The standout sophomore now has 988 yards and 12 touchdowns on the year.

"Darren played hard no matter what the score was and I give him a lot of credit," said Dubzinski. "He didn't quit. He got banged up a little bit at the end. But he's one of the guys we're going to continue to build the program around. He continues to play hard and get better."

Watson did not play the fourth quarter after coming up gimpy on the sidelines after scoring his third touchdown. He had an ice pack around his left leg, and was carried to the buses piggy-back style by one of his teammates.

The Knights have on game remaining on Thanksgiving against rival Andover. The Warriors stuffed North Andover on the goal line on fourth down to hold on for the win in last year's holiday game.

"We know Andover will be a huge favorite and they should because they're a very good team," said Dubzinski. "But we'll see what happens. They were a great team last year and we came two inches away from beating them."
