HAVERHILL — On the first play from scrimmage, Everett’s Christopher Jenkins took the handoff, bounced to the left, evaded a tackler, broke 29 yards into enemy territory before he was brought down, got up and let the Haverhill defense hear it before joining his teammates in the huddle.

The Hillies might not have known it then, but they were in for a long night.

Three plays later Marvens Fedna ran 10 yards to the endzone, quieting the previously ruckus Haverhill faithful.

Maybe Everett was angry about being the “underdog” in this one? Maybe the Crimson Tide were channeling their inner Alabama?

One thing is for sure, the 10-time Super Bowl champions played like a Nick Saban coached team Saturday night at Trinity Stadium, easily handling Haverhill 35-6 in the first round of the Division 1 North playoffs and asserting their presence back near the top of Massachusetts football - if they ever did leave for a brief moment this season.

“They were just more physical than us tonight and had a better game plan,” said Haverhill coach Tim O’Connor. “They outplayed us and they out-coached us tonight.

“We weren’t crisp early on. We were tight, and we weren’t very fluid tonight.”

Haverhill played Everett tough in the first half, but had trouble matching up with the side and speed of the Everett wideouts.

After each team stopped the other, Everett quarterback and UConn commit Jordan McAfee (6-foot-4, 215-pounds) found his 6-foot-6 receiver Pierre Zidor for 35 yards on the first play of the drive. McAffe hit Mike Sainristil and Jason Maitre for 25 and 11-yard gains, and Fedna punctuated the drive with a 4-yard run.

After another stop on defense, Everett went to the no huddle offense to catch Haverhill off guard and went 77 yards on seven plays for another 11-yard TD run by Maitre.

Haverhill drove down to the Everett 4-yard-line on it’s next possession but was unable to score, giving the Tide a 21-0 lead at the half. The Hillies again drove 50 yards on 11 plays to get inside the Everett red zone to open the second half, but Mike Sainristil came up with a back-breaking 90-yard interception return.

“Right before half it hurt a little bit not to punch it in and make it 21-7,” said O’Connor. “We were really hoping to cut the lead and then get the ball to start the second half and see what happens, but we couldn’t punch it in.”

Teshaun Watson scored Haverhill’s lone touchdown in the third quarter when he scored on a 3-yard run. He finished as the Hillies leading rusher with 45 yards on seven carries. Any slim hope for a comeback was dashed in about a minute when Everett rushed down the field and McAfee hit Anthony Norcia on a 2-yard touchdown pass in a drive that lasted 50 seconds.

The early fourth quarter touchdown ended the night for many of the Everett offensive starters.

Haverhill did get a good game from Pedro Santiago, who caught nine passes for 88 yards. Quarterback Broghean McGovern went 13 of 30 passing for 138 yards.

The Hillies will still play two games in the coming weeks as well as a Thanksgiving game at Lowell.

It was indeed a rough night for the home team, but Haverhill still has the joy of being champs for the third time since moving from the GBL to the MVC in 1980. The Hillies won the MVC small in 2014, and were quad-champs in 2001.

“It hurts but the better team won tonight,” said O’Connor. “Everett deserved it and I wish them nothing but the best. We’ll back up and come ready to go on Monday and try to finish the year 9-2.”
