Odds and ends: Last year's star Jonathan Rodrick is starting for Division 1 Mount St. Mary. ... Sophomore football standout Derek Furey is being switched from attack to midfield, where he is more suited, according to coach Gary Sherman. ... Freshman Alex Desmarais, who has been playing since the fourth grade, will start at goalie and has looked impressive in the preseason. Another freshman, hockey player David Evans, has also looked good. ... Junior Ryan Rothwell is considered one of the best ice hockey goalies in the state, but he plays attack in lacrosse. ... Junior Erik Hatton and senior Max Zdrada are the heart and soul of the defense.

Coach Gary Sherman (4th year, 23-23): "If we stay healthy, I think we can make a serious run at it (Division 2 title). We only lost three seniors and we have more balance and depth than we've had. We have more threats to score than we've ever had and our real strength is defense. With Chris (Hinton) and Derek (Furey), I don't think too many teams can match those two for a midfield line."
