MANCHESTER — Trailing by three with two minutes to play, Whittier drove the length of the field before fumbling at the Manchester Essex 15-yard line, ending the comeback bid and giving the Hornets the 15-12 win.
Whittier led 12-0 at halftime after Hunter McKinnon rushed for a 46-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter, and then Shane Mambro added a 3-yard run with five minutes to play in the second.
Manchester Essex came back with a 20-yard touchdown in the third, and then with 5:02 to play in the fourth, the Hornets took the lead for good on a 30-yard run.
Whittier (2-7) hosts O'Bryant next weekend at a time to be determined.
