LAWRENCE — Central Catholic needed a rebound after last week's disappointing loss to rival St. John's Prep.

Enter sophomore quarterback Bret Edwards.

The Lowell resident threw four touchdown passes, while completing 12 of 15 passes and 238 yards in a big-time rout of Chelmsford High, 42-0, last night at Veterans Stadium.

The 6-foot-1 Edwards' performance bordered on special last night. His first completion of the game was an 18-yard pass to Steven Jackson (three TDs), putting Central ahead 6-0.
On fourth-and-12 from 29-yard line, Edwards threw a perfect strike to Robert Fitzgerald (two TDs and an interception) on a crossing pattern to put Central ahead by three scores.
Central's defense deserves big kudos as well. Led by Mike Horak, who had two big sacks in the first half, Chelmsford had zero rushing yards in the first half. The Lions could muster only 94 yards of offense for the game, including 20 yards rushing.
Central led 35-0 at the half and opened the third quarter with a 54-yard bullet from Edwards to Jackson to make it 42-0.
It makes Central's throwing stats even more impressive, considering it was accumulated just two plays into the third quarter.

"We needed this kind of game after last week," said Edwards. "I needed it. I needed to show my team I could get the job done."
Central was able to go deep into its depth chart, with nine running backs getting a chance to carry the ball, like sophomore Ty Donatio, who had a 67-yard TD called back on a holding penalty.
Next up for Central is Everett, which will probably be the most interesting game of the weekend in the state. The game will be played on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Everett.
"We proved against St. John's Prep we can hang with the big boys," said Fitzgerald. "Now it's Everett. It'll be tough, but we really believe in ourselves. And we will have a great week of practice preparing for them."
