SALEM, N.H. — Salem High coach Rob Pike made it a point of emphasis to get off to a good start against Dover High, which was coming off a blowout loss last week.
Senior Nicholas Shumski apparently kept good notes. It took him all of seven seconds to go 85 yards and put Salem on the scoreboard. The cherry on top was that immediately following the TD, Shumski picked up a botched snap on the extra point and he sprinted to the right sideline barely getting the two-point conversion and 8-0 lead.
The TD return was the first opening kickoff returned for a touchdown by a Salem player in 45 years. Coincidentally, it happened against Dover. Last week, Shumski had the game-winning TD, a 42-yard run, in a great win over Winnacunnet (26-21).
Salem scored three consecutive touchdowns over the next 12-plus minutes coasting to a dominating, box-to-wire 43-0 win.
Shumski also had the fourth touchdown in that Blue Devils run.
"What a luxury it is having Nicholas," said coach Pike. "He so versatile. He just makes thing happen. We wanted to get off to a good start and we couldn't have asked for a better way."
Junior Benjamin Emerson played the role of Shumski on defense. He had two early sacks and a fumble recovery by the time the first quarter was over.
"Tough, tough kid," said Pike. "Ben is a football player. Last year he was a linebacker. We moved him to defensive end and he was everything we hoped he'd be and more. He's a tough guy to block ... very strong."
Salem was dominant on both sides of the ball.
Salem running backs, eight in all, combined for 359 yards with James LeBlond leading the way with 111 yards thanks to a late 82-yard TD jaunt. Brothers Charles and Joshua Sibanda each rushed for 89 yards apiece.
Defensively, Emerson and Doug Maroun combined for 18 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble.
"We had a very good week of practice and needed this kind of win," said Emerson.
Now it gets harder for the undefeated Blue Devils. They host the defending Div. 1 champs, Pinkerton Academy next Friday night at 7 p.m.
Salem lost a tough one, 14-7, in Derry a year ago.
"They are the cream of the crop. They always are," said Coach Pike. "But we will come to play. We always work hard. Our goal is to always get better. We will definitely come to play."
