Despite three touchdowns by David Wiedenfeld, Londonderry lost to Exeter 28-20 in a game that came down to the final play.

Down by eight with five seconds to play, Londonderry (1-2) had the ball at the Exeter (3-0) seven with one last chance to tie the game. The Lancers had managed to pick apart the Blue Hawks defense throughout the final drive, but when the chips were down, the Hawks held firm and forced an incompletion on the prospective game-tying throw.

Exeter took an early lead on a 48-yard touchdown run, but Londonderry came right back to tie it after Wiedenfeld capped off a drive with a 3-yard run to make it 7-7.

Wiedenfeld added another 2-yard score early in the second, and after Exeter took the lead on a 26-yard touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion, Wiedenfeld scored again on another 2-yard run to give Londonderry a 20-15 lead going into halftime.

The second half proved to be a tough, defensive affair, but Exeter was eventually able to take the lead after quarterback Kyle Ball scampered for a 2-yard touchdown with 12 seconds left in the third to put the Hawks up 21-20.

Ball found receiver Hunter Long for a 27-yard touchdown midway through the fourth to extend the lead to 28-20, and with time running out, Exeter had a chance to essentially put the game away with a first down that might have allowed the Hawks to run out the clock.

But on fourth-and-2, Ball slipped on the grass and was stopped short, giving Londonderry a short field and a chance to tie up the game.

From there, Jake Stevens drove the Lancers down the field deep into Exeter territory, converting a pair of first downs through the air and another on the ground. Then, a pass interference call set up Londonderry with a first-and-goal situation at the seven with only five seconds left, but Stevens' pass fell short.

Along with his three touchdowns, Wiedenfeld finished with 40 yards rushing on 12 carries. Stevens went 7-for-17 with 79 yards passing, and sophomore Ben Johnson also saw playing time at QB, going 1-for-4 with 15 yards passing to go along with 21 yards in six carries on the ground.

Londonderry is at archrival Pinkerton on Friday at 7 p.m.
