MANCHESTER — The final score (Georgetown 26, Manchester Essex 14) doesn’t tell the whole story of the Thanksgiving showdown at Hyland Field.

With just over two minutes left in regulation, the hosts trailed 20-14 and were on the Royals’ 15-yard line. Craig Carter threw to a receiver for what looked to be a tying score. But the ball hit off the receiver’s hands and helmet and bounced right into the hands of 5-10, 138-pound Georgetown defensive back Liam Lydon.

“I kept asking all game long when is Liam going to show up? And, he did in a big way,” Georgetown coach Justin Spurr said. “We lost a friend Cam Coy, a freshman player and family member who wore number 26, and we put 26 on the board on Thanksgiving, our last game. It was incredible.”

It was Georgetown’s first Thanksgiving win since 2010. The Royals finished the season at 3-8 while the Hornets fell to 2-9.

“Phenomenal win,” said Spurr, whose team was averaging just 6.4 points a game. “Manchester gave us two fantastic games this year (Georgetown won 14-13 on Sept. 27).

“I give them all the credit in the world. We won earlier this year in the waning moments and I was really afraid they were going to return the favor at the end. Fortunately Liam made that big interception and we came away with the win.”

On the opening kickoff, Georgetown successfully executed an onside kick when defensive back Jimmy Sherman recovered on the Manchester 34.

The Royals marched down the field to score first when Jacob Meyers ran it in from a yard out to make it 6-0.

In the second quarter the Hornets answered on a 2-yard run by Carter for a 7-6 lead. .

That lead, however, was short lived as 5-9, 130-pound senior cornerback Nick DePasquale, a standout all day, took the kickoff back 54 yards for a touchdown. He added the rush and the Royals were back on top 14-6, and that’s the way the half ended.

The third quarter began with Georgetown driving 63 yards with DePasquale finishing it off a with a 9-yard TD run to make it 20-7.

Carter hooked up with Hunter Flood to cut the lead to 20-14 before the Hornets got the ball back one final time.

With less than five minutes to play, Georgetown fumbled and the Hornets recovered at the Royals’ 35 yard line. But the Hornets were halted by Lydon’s interception.

Then, to make matters worse, DePasquale raced 65 more yards to put the finishing touches on the win.
