HAVERHILL – It wasn't a day to remember for the Georgetown seniors, who lost to Hamilton-Wenham 35-0 on Senior Day this past Saturday, but head coach Justin Spurr expressed confidence in the program's future despite the rough stretch his team has endured.

“We come to battle,” he said. “I have a great relationship with all of (my players). We’re having fun and what I hear from all the coaches is that we’re in a good spot this year.”

For a team lacking manpower and a recent winning culture, Spurr’s positivity after a 35-0 loss will be a feeling the team can embrace moving ahead. For now, the Royals have lost four straight, including three in a row by 30 points or more, and the Generals (4-3) became the latest team to shutout Georgetown (1-6). The Royals were also shut out by Lynnfield two weeks ago.

The game started with each side trading fumbles, but a great punt from Hamilton-Wenham put the Generals in charge of the field position, and then a second Georgetown fumble set up a Jimmy Littlefield 9-yard touchdown.

Once Hamilton-Wenham had the lead, the Generals took the Royals for a ride from there. Littlefield struck twice more in the second quarter – ripping off touchdown runs from 50 and then 15 yards out to push the lead to 21-0.

Georgetown’s Jimmy Sherman grabbed an interception late in the first half, celebrating with an Antoine Walker-like shimmy to try and fire his team up.

Unfortunately, the Royals lost the ball again shortly after, and the team's offense never made a serious attempt at the end zone. Nick DePesquale sprung for 40 yards down the left sideline in the second half to set Georgetown up just outside of the red zone. The inspiring run came immediately after DePesquale went down hard after being tackled by his team’s sideline. But the offense turned the ball over on downs when the Generals had a chance to regroup their defense.

As the clock wound down and the scoreboard read 35-0, the Georgetown band got their turn on Senior Day. The conductor took requests from graduating members of the unit after playing Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water as the score got out of hand.

The game finished with the victors rushing to the line to get one more snap off in Georgetown territory, looking to make it 42-0. But Georgetown won the game’s final play, putting a stop to the final Hamilton-Wenham attempt.
