ANDOVER — The start certainly was not what Andover High had in mind.

Facing winless Billerica, the Golden Warriors turned the ball over on downs on their first two possessions, and fell behind on a 65-yard touchdown pass.

Then, finally, the Warriors woke up.

Quarterback E.J. Perry IV connected with Andrew Soucy on a 20-yard touchdown pass, kicking off a run that saw Andover score on three straight drives and six of their next seven possessions on the way to rolling past Billerica 41-23.

“We definitely picked it up after a bad start,” said lineman Chris Tully. “They played us very tough early, but defense made some important adjustments to step it up, and on offense we kept rolling with more than 40 points. It was a good victory tonight.”

The victory made the Golden Warriors 4-2 heading into their bye week before they host Lowell — which was blown out by Central Catholic last night — in the final game of the regular season.

“We are relieved,” said Soucy. “We knew that we had to win this one, and 41 points is pretty good. And we knew we had to step it up on defense after last week (against Chelmsford) and we did that.”

Leading the Golden Warriors with another massive night was running back Kevin Chen. The senior set a new career-high with 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns including a 45-yard score.

“Chen is just the best,” said receiver Zach Walker. “He is just coming up huge for us every week. He does it all.”

When Chen wasn’t slicing through the defense on the ground, it was QB Perry IV doing the damage.

The sophomore threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns. He had to throw just twice in the second half, one a 60-yard touchdown to Soucy and the second a 64-yard score to Walker.

“E.J. came up so clutch with some great passes,” said Soucy. “We feel like the passing game is really clicking and coming along great.”

The most important pass of the day was his 20-yard strike to Soucy with 27 seconds to go in the first, tying the game and sparking the offense that then saw Chen and Thomas Perez each rush for scores in the second.

“That first touchdown was definitely big,” said Soucy. “After they took the lead we were a little bit deflated. So getting the momentum back on our side by finishing a big drive was huge.”

The Golden Warrior defense also did the job, led by a 14-tackle, two-sack day for linebacker Brian Duffy. Arman Koul also had a sack while Ommel Bonilla had eight stops and Mike Konjoian had an interception.

“We executed better, we were playing hard all over the field and we got it done,” said Chen. “It is a good way to go into the off week and get ready for Lowell.”
