SALEM — The first couple of series looked liked the people who ranked the two teams, Salem High and Nashua South High, knew what they were doing.

Nashua South was ranked anywhere from third to fifth in the state in a few polls and Salem was not ranked in those same polls. Nashua South got four first downs before punting on its first series and Salem was three-and-out.

But the game immediately turned in Salem's favor after Nashua South's speedster Collin Morrow, appearing to be scoring on a long run, was caught from behind by Salem's speedster Austin Homsey at the 6-yard line.

On the next play, Salem's Doug Maroun not only forced a fumble, but recovered the fumble.

With that momentum, Salem marched 92 yards on 12 plays, with Homesey hauling in a 3-yard pass from quarterback John Cerretani.

While Nashua South scored two plays later, thanks to a 74-yard hookup between quarterback Malik Langa and wideout Joshua Perry, to tie the score, Salem eventually got the lead back near the end of the second half, thanks a 26-yard pass by Cerretani to Kenny Calabrese.

Salem went ahead 14-7 and never looked back.

The Blue Devils took leads of 21-7 and 28-14, before coasting in the final quarter for the opening night win.

Homsey finished with two TDs and five catches for 54 yards. In fact all of his catches were touchdowns or first downs. Cerretani finished going 8-for-11 for 121 yards.

"I don't think people realize how good we are," said Homsey. "But that's OK. Honestly, we like it that way."

Salem plays at Keene next Friday night.
