Sansing takes 2nd

Pinkerton junior Morgan Sansing ran an excellent 18:40.5 in the Division 1 girls meet but had to settle for second behind Exeter's Shannon Murdock, who was clocked in 18:32.6.

Astros' junior Ariel Vaillancourt had one of her best races of the year to finish third in 19:25.2, but the Astros were a distant fourth with 102 points. Bishop Guertin won a tiebreaker with Concord for first, both with 73 points, with Winnacunnet right behind with 75.

Joining the Pinkerton girls at the MOC next week will be Windham, which was fifth in the Division 2 meet. Powerhouse Coe-Brown was the overwhelming winner with just 22 points, placing all seven of its runners in the top 13.

Sweep for Gr. Lawrence

It was a huge day for Greater Lawrence Saturday at the Commonwealth Conference meet at Greater Lowell.

The Reggies' boys won their third large school straight title, nudging the host team on its own course for the third time this year, the girls won their second straight small school crown and the boys captured the JV title.

"It was just an awesome day for the program," said coach Jay Santomassino. "To have the whole team win something was terrific."

The boys got a five-point spread over Greater Lowell by taking three of the top four places. Yosvaldy Tejeda led the way in 17:18 on the 5K course — his fourth straight league title — while junior Dylan Colon was an impressive runner-up in 17:42 and Miguel Cumba was fourth.

The Reggies' girls also had a battle, overtaking Presentation of Mary by four points. Carmen Rivera was third for the reggies and Suheiry Pereyra was fourth but the key, said Santomassino, was the ninth-place finish of Maria Anziana.

"She was 13th halfway through the race but battled past the third and fourth runners for PMA," he said. "That was the difference."

Maria Splaine and Michela Leo were fifth and sixth respectively for PMA.

In the CAC large school meet, Whittier placed a distant second to Notre Dame. Corinne Bilodeau led the Wildcats, in fourth place.

Methuen boys runner-up

Pretty much as expected, Methuen's boys finished second  in the MVC meet, but the Rangers were a little further behind Lowell than they would have liked.

Lowell was first with 37 points while the Rangers finished with 71. Matt Marchand had a strong race for Methuen, edging junior standout Jeff Reddy for 10th with a 16:38 on Chelmsford's 5K course.

The top local runner was Marty Conrad, who was seventh in 16:37. Teammate Zach Frahlich was 13th.

Simione takes 3rd

Central Catholic's Tiffany Simione finished third overall in the MVC girls race with a 19:36 clocking, but she couldn't keep pace with a pair of juniors, Lowell star Kaley Richards (19:02) and Dracut's Rachael Flores (19:19).

Team-wise, Andover was a strong third with 82 points, just 12 behind first-place Billerica. Sarah Tothmann was eighth, Chantal Kellerd was ninth and surging sophomore Caroline Wacome was 11th.

Demeule 2nd in CAL

Pentucket senior Alex Demeule ran an outstanding race to finish second overall at the Cape Ann league race, running a 16:07 at Bradley Palmer;'s 3.07-mile course, trailing just Newburyport star Nick Carleo.

Newburyport won the team crown by four points over Manchester Essex with the Sachems in fifth, one place ahead of North Reading. Jake O'Connell led the Hornets, coming in sixth.
