LAWRENCE — For most of three quarters, Lawrence withstood every punch Chelmsford threw and remained within striking distance, cutting the deficit to six points in the third.

But a pair of golden opportunities both ended up as turnovers on downs, and the Lions took control, besting the Lancers 47-27 last night.

“It was just a breakdown here or a breakdown there and mental mistakes that cost us,” said Lawrence coach Mike Yameen. “We couldn’t get off the field on third down and we made too many mistakes that hurt us.”

Chelmsford grabbed an early lead with a touchdown, but the Lancers bounced right back on the leg of kicker Eddie Cabrera.

After a Rainer Almonte 65-yard run, Cabrera booted a 30-yard field goal on Lawrence’s first drive, then a posession later he tied the game 6-6 with a 32-yard field goal.

The Lions retook the lead with a pair of touchdowns. But back came the Lancers when Kenny Richards ran for a 27-yard touchdown and Cabrera scampered for the 2-point conversion on a fake field goal.

“Kenny really ran the ball well,” said Yameen of his back, who finished with 57 yards on 7 carries. “But we couldn’t take advantage because we would have a mistake here and a mistake there.”

Lawrence nearly took the lead late in the half, when Rafael Medina recovered a fumble. The Lancers then drove to the Lions’ 29-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs with just over a minute before the half. A defensive breakdown later and the score was 27-14 at halftime.

The Lancers did strike back early second half, when QB Nelson Velario connected with Luis Crispin on a 43-yard touchdown pass to turn it into a one-score game again.

After Chelmsford added to the lead, Lawrence responded with a drive to the Lions’ 36-yard line. But the Lancers once again turned the ball over on downs, and could not recover.

Valerio finished with 208 yards and two touchdowns, both to Crispin. He had to leave the game late with an apparent leg injury.

Xavier Santiago continued to shine on defense with a pair of sacks and 10 tackles and senior nose guard Darius Morkeski turned in 10 stops of his own. Presley Blanco had a sack and Deon Gandi and Andy Delacruz combined for a sack of their own.

“We didn’t play like a smart football team today,” said Yameen. “Now we have to go back to the drawing board. There are two games left and we want to get two wins.”
