BILLERICA — Instead of looking ahead to a winner-take-all showdown on Thursday, Central Catholic first handled some much-needed business by routing Billerica 42-14 last night.

The seventh-ranked Raiders clinched at least a tie for the MVC Large title by jumping on the Indians early, needing only eight plays from scrimmage to take a 21-0 lead. In fact, Central (5-1 overall, 3-0 conference) grabbed a seven-point lead before the offense took the field when Cody Demers returned an interception 17 yards on Billerica's first snap.

"This is never an easy place to play," Central coach Chuck Adamopolous said. "But I thought we took care of business ... And it was good to get started like that."

The offense managed its share of the load, scoring on their next three possessions. Greg Marggraf made his first reception of the season pay off, scoring from 16 yards out on a pass from Mike Milano, who then provided a 21-point lead with a 34-yard run.

"We've got some big play guys this year, and we can score in a hurry," Adamopolous said.

Markus Edmunds capped the early onslaught with a 36-yard scoring dash that finished off a 93-yard drive midway through the second. That possession was set up when Central kept Billerica off the board despite a first-and-goal from the 3.
Leading rusher D'Andre Drummond Mayrie had only 10 carries but made the most of them, gaining 84 yards, including a 1-yard plunge less than 2 minutes into the second half. Six of his rushes netted 10 yards or more. Milano scored the Raiders' final touchdown on a 2-yard run with 5:38 left in the third.

Last night's victory sets up Thursday night's home match up with Chelmsford, which lost its share of the conference lead in a loss to Lowell, which also has a chance to tie for the crown.

"There's stuff we didn't do great tonight," said Adamopolous when asked how he'll prepare in the short week ahead. "This group's maturing as a team as the season goes on, so they'll be ready to focus on Chelmsford. Thursday night's essentially an MVC championship game. Our goal is to when our league, and Thursday night is the night we hope to achieve that."
