Masconomet hockey "steals" a win at Haverhill

It's not the kind of message that Masconomet Regional hockey coach Bill Blackwell would otherwise advice in this, the season of gift giving.

But when it comes to his hockey team, he doesn't mind that his team stole one last night.

Down by two goals with eight minutes to play, the Chieftains benefitted from a freak bounce that led to their first goal, then ripped off three more to leave the Haverhill Rink with a stunning 4-2 victory over Haverhill High.

"We got out of there before the cops came in," joked Blackwell, whose team improved to 2-1 with the victory.

Third line winger Nick DiPietro got things started for Masco by pouncing on a puck that had bounced off a Haverhill defender's leg and jamming it in the net.

Junior wing Tom Brazil knotted it up with under five minutes to go, and linemate Cam Greeley, an assistant captain, buried the go-ahead goal 39 seconds later. A Brazil empty netter with 22 seconds to play sealed the Chieftains' victory.

Varsity newcomer Mike DiGorgio stood tall in the Masco cage, kicking out 24 shots.
