Five interceptions lead Andover

ANDOVER — During the preseason, Andy Coke made a prediction about fellow defensive back Andrew Deloury.

“Deloury is going to open some eyes this season,” said the All-Scholastic.

Yesterday, both defensive backs made plenty of noise.

The Golden Warriors combined for five interceptions, one Deloury ran back for a touchdown and the other four setting up scores as Andover rolled over Methuen 52-13 last night.

“It was a really exciting day,” said Deloury, whose Warriors snapped a three-game losing streak to the Rangers. “We played very sound defense and were aggressive. It meant a lot to bring the (Larry Klimas-Dick Collins) Cup back to Andover.”

Coke and Deloury each made two interceptions, while star kicker Mark Zavrl added a pick of his own, set up by massive hit by linebacker Matt Crush.

“We practiced in pads full speed all week,” said Zavrl. “We set out to make big hits all night.”

The Golden Warriors set the tone early, picked off passes on each of Methuen’s first three drives of the game, two by Coke and one by Zavrl, with Andover scoring touchdowns on each ensuing drive.

“I haven’t had the ball thrown my way much this season,” said Coke, who made a full-out dive to make his second pick. “I told the coaches if the ball was thrown my way I’d get it back for them.”

Deloury then set the game out of reach in the second half, intercepting passes on back-to-back drives. The first set up a David Giribaldi touchdown and the second Deloury took to the end zone himself for a 46-yard score.

“On both I jumped the route,” said Deloury. “The second I cut back and (teammate) Adam Ladd pushed me into the end zone.”

C.J. Scarpa continued his impressive first season by throwing for three touchdowns, one each to Coke, Zavrl and Will Heikkinen. Coke added a rushing score and 44 yards and six carries.

Cam Farnham added a highlight reel score on a punt return. He initially broke to the left sideline, turned, and ran all the way to the right and in for a 56 yard touchdown.

Crush led the Andover defense with 12 tackles while Brendan Paquette and Will Eikenberry each made eight stops for the winners.

Sophomore running back Luis Perez was a bright spot for the Rangers, rushing 24 times for 93 yards.

“I am so proud of how well we played on both sides of the ball,” said Andover coach E.J. Perry. “Deloury’s pick-6 was fantastic and Coke was great.”
