CHELMSFORD — At halftime it appeared Andover held all of the momentum.

The Golden Warriors had stormed back from a 13-point deficit to take a three-point lead after two quarters.

But Chelmsford rebounded with three third-quarter touchdowns, two off turnovers, and Andover fell to the Lions 48-28 in a battle of 4-1 MVC Division 1 opponents.

“We fought tooth-and-nail,” said Warriors coach E.J. Perry. “But that is a very good team, and we allowed some big plays that really cost us.”

This marked the 12th time in 13 years that the Lions have defeated Andover, and since The Eagle-Tribune began keeping complete records in 1984, the Golden Warriors are now 5-22-1 against Chelmsford.

“Andover is a very creative and talented group,” said Chelmsford coach Bruce Rich. “We told the kids at halftime to play smarter. We made too many mistakes in the first half.”

The Golden Warriors, trailing 13-8 early in the second after a 55-yard touchdown pass from C.J. Scarpa to Will Heikkinen, used some trickery to take the lead.

First, Andy Coke took a pitch from Scarpa and completed a 40-yard halfback option pass for a touchdown to Cam Farnham.

Then, a possession later, Scarpa kept the ball on an option, then 5-yards past the line of scrimmage tossed it to a trailing Coke who ran 14 yards for a score, making it 22-19 Golden Warriors.

“They do a lot of different things,” said Rich. “That halfback pass was really nice and it was a great option play.

But the Lions bounced back with a 13-play scoring drive that killed the first 6:41 of the third quarter.

Then, Chelmsford scored interceptions on back-to-back possessions, the prettiest of which a snag by Boston College-bound linebacker Tim Joy.

“Joy made an unbelievable play,” said Perry. “C.J. made the right throw, but that is just a great play made by a player going to BC.”

Freddie Scribner led the Golden Warriors with 93 rushing yards on 13 carries, while Coke chipped in with 85 yards, also on 13 attempts and caught six passes for 60 yards. Farnham added seven catches for 78 yards.

Mark Zavrl led Andover with eight tackles and a sack, while Greg Calabro picked off a pass and blocked an extra point. Matt Crush, playing linebacker, made seven stops.

“There were big plays both ways,” said Perry. “Coke was great. We’ll be back. WE just have to hope we have the opportunity we had last season.”
