Central girls wins tourney

Down by nine points with 2 minutes left against Newton South, the Central girls basketball team rallied to send the game into overtime. From there, the Raiders posted a 73-70 victory in the championship game of the Comcast tourney. This is the fourth straight year that Central has won the tourney.

Casey McLaughlin scored 20 points and pulled in 12 rebounds as Central Catholic overcame a shaky start (down 13-7 after one) to defeat Arlington Catholic, 55-47.  The Raiders play Newton South, today at 2:30 p.m. in  the championship game.

LAWRENCE — It seemed like nothing would change.

Despite having a decided height advantage, Central Catholic couldn’t get consistent production in the paint against unbeaten Andover in its first two battles. The hard defensive work of Jackie Alois and Nicole Boudreau down low prevailed before and threatened to work again through the first half of Round 3 yesterday.

Slow start, big surge

 

Central Catholic's girls found themselves trailing 18-10 after the first quarter before outscoring Billerica 22-8 in the second quarter on their way to a 63-40 victory. Alex Borrelli had a season-high 16 points for the Raiders (13-2). Casey McLaughlin had nine rebounds and four blocks to go along with 18 points.
