Central seniors come through in Thanksgiving win over Lawrence

LAWRENCE - No one would blame you if you thought Anthony Caggianelli was already looking ahead to winter track.

After all, he showed great form when he hurdled a Lawrence defender during the first quarter of Wednesday night's Thanksgiving rivalry game, and the Central Catholic senior did finish seventh in the area with a 15.34 in the 100-meter hurdle last spring.

Westford denies Lawrence shot at history

WESTFORD — The forecast for Friday night called for rain and lots of it — and even that may have undersold the deluge that poured down on the field at Westford Academy.
Sharing the field with the gallons of rainwater were the visiting Lawrence Lancers and the host Grey Ghosts (5-5), who had planned for this type of football earlier in the week.
“Practicing for all types of conditions,” Westford head coach Pat Gendron said of his team’s training. “Use different balls — dry ball, wet ball — getting balls in, making sure we’ve got guys on the sideline doing their job, making sure everyone’s adding value somehow.”
That preparation served the Grey Ghosts well, as they pounded their way to a 32-6 win over Lawrence thanks to three second-quarter touchdowns and a running game that dominated time of possession.
Senior Nicholas Faretra amassed 102 yards on 10 carries and plunging into the end zone twice on runs of two and 37 yards.
Senior captain Tyler Bella also found the end zone on a run for Westford, turning in the game’s longest play on a 71-yard run that punctuated the 26-point victory.
And while the fierce rain – worsened by a whipping wind – caused the game to be fought on the ground, the Westford defense also came up big to bolster their offense. The Grey Ghosts held the Lancers (2-7) to just 75 total yards in the first half, and blanked the opposition entirely until 1:14 into the final quarter. There, a 48-yard strike from junior Jacob Tamayo to senior Anthony Garcia put the Lancers on the board.
Lawrence had a chance to make history. Riding a two-game win streak, the Lancers hadn’t won three straight since 1999 ... with one of those 1999 wins a loss but they won on a forfeit.
Prior to that, 1996 was Lawrence’s last three-game win streak.

Tamayo, Lawrence charge to second straight win

CHELMSFORD — When Lawrence football began the season with six straight losses, it would have been easy for the Lancers to give up on the season.

First year head coach Rhandy Audate’s squad, however, never showed any sign of quit.

“I really believe that if our students do the right thing day in and day out, I believe it translates,” Audate said. “Their focus was here tonight. You could see it.”
Behind a huge day for QB Jacob Tamayo and receiver/defensive back Manuel Lara, Lawrence (2-6) scored its second straight victory with a convincing 34-13 victory over Chelmsford.
Top linebacker Brandon Santell also starred at running back, rushing for 117 yards on 20 carries. His 4-yard touchdown run opened the scoring in the first quarter. And while the Lancers primarily relied on Santell’s legs, they got lethal effectiveness from their junior quarterback.
Tamayo threw the ball just six times, but three of his throws went for touchdowns of 20 or more yards.
“If you’ve watched us all season, what we’ve missed is big plays all year,” Audate said. “But you know what, we have battled.”
Tamayo’s first score of the day came when he unloaded a 49-yard touchdown pass to classmate Ayvion Prak with just 16.4 seconds remaining in the first half.
After Chelmsford scored to open the second half, Tamayo found junior receiver Lara on a 54-yard touchdown pass.
“We’re building from the ground up and so this is the point now where we’re starting to click. We’re starting to connect on a few of these,” Audate said.
Lara added another big play when he came down with a tipped ball and returning it 37 yards for the back-breaking touchdown.
The Lancers would score once more for good measure, with Tamayo hitting senior Anthony Garcia from 20 yards out for the final touchdown.
“Back to the drawing board, back to work,” Audate said. “When you can do more, when you can excel, why not push? So we’re pushing.”

Prescott, Haverhill defense stifle Lawrence

Frosh Harrington perfect in Andover win

BY JEFF HAMRICK

sports@eagletribune.com

ANDOVER – Victory Harrington had a tough varsity debut on the road. Making things a little tougher on his young psyche, the Andover freshman had a couple weeks to dwell on the performance before returning to the field Friday night.
“It did keep me awake thinking about it,” Harrington said of throwing four interceptions in a loss to Franklin. “I was nervous about that last night, but then I came here ready to play and the team got it done.”
With both teams forced to sit out Week 2 because of the gas-explosion disaster that upended both communities, Andover and Lawrence finally got back to playing. The visiting Lancers kept things close for most of the opening half, but with Harrington completing all 11 of his passes, the Golden Warriors ran away with a 38-14 MVC victory.
“We just came back ready to fight,” said Harrington, who threw for 125 yards to six receivers and his first two career touchdowns. “Everything was much slower, so I could pick up the game more. Everything’s getting better every week. But you’re only as good as your next (game).”
Andover (1-1) took an early lead on a Josh Ramos 14-yard run, but Lawrence rebounded to cut the deficit to 7-6 on a bullish Brandon Santell 14-yard power run with 4:06 remaining in the second quarter.
The Golden Warriors, however, exploded for 21 points during a 51-second  stretch to blow open the game.
Ramos, who had 120 yards on 12 carries, capped a 63-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown with 1:05 remaining. That’s when the defense took over.
Tommy Duncan returned an interception for a touchdown with 53 seconds left. Then one play after a Nic Silva pick, Harrington recorded his first touchdown, drilling a 35-yard pass to Brendon Moody on a post route to provide a 28-6 lead with 16 left before intermission.
Harrington finished off his perfect outing with 14-yard pass to John Gemmell with another slick throw early in the third. Shamus Florio gave Andover a 38-6 lead with a 20-yard fourth-quarter field goal.
“We just needed to clean things up,” Andover coach E.J. Perry said of rebounding from the opening loss. “We have young guys playing, and they stepped up tonight. (Harrington) just needed the two weeks. We played very soon for him. I knew what he had, and I knew what he was going to do.
“When you saw him settle in, you know it was very good. For a freshman to do what he’s doing at the quarterback position, that’s poise and composure. I don’t care who you’re playing against.”
Lawrence (0-2) finished the night’s scoring with a 14-yard pass from Jacob Tamayo to Manuel Lara. Tamayo overcame his pair of interceptions, finishing with 154 yards of total offense.
“We’re working on things like composure and learning the games. There are little things that we’re still learning about the game. I was proud of the way they came out and battled tonight”
