LAWRENCE — The goal was picturesque.

“Gorgeous,” coach Anne Marinaro called it.

Gia O’Connor’s right-footed strike, a redirect of Marielle Elie’s corner kick early in the second half, gave Central Catholic a 2-1 win over Arlington in the Division 2 North quarterfinals at Veterans Memorial Stadium last night. The Raiders will face No. 3 Reading in the semis tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Central blanks Wilmington to advance

Central Catholic defeated Wilmington, 3-0, thanks to an impressive performance by Ashley Evangelista (two goals, one assist). It was tight through the first half, but three second half goals secured the Division 2 North opening round victory for the Raiders.

Lowell 2, Central Catholic 1

Central Catholic fell behind 2-0 and couldn't recover, falling 2-1 to a desperate Lowell team (6-6-1) which needed the win to make the Division 1 North Tournament. The Raiders (14-2-2) controlled much of the play, but its only goal came from Gia O'Connor.

Central clinches MVC

Thanks to Rachel Bourque (goal), Gia O'Connor (assist) and Lauren Hoole (7 saves), the Central Catholic girls soccer team clinched the top spot in the MVC for the first time since 2001 with a 1-0 victory over Andover. Sam Arnold had nine saves for the Golden Warriors.

Battle of unbeatens In a battle of two of the top girls soccer teams in the state, Masconomet (12-0) slipped through the defense for a lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Central Catholic (11-1-1). Both teams had nine shots on net. "We missed some wide-open opportunities, but it was a good physical game between two good teams," said Central coach Anne Marinaro.

Another Central shutout

The Central Catholic girls soccer team failed to prevail for only the second time all year despite posting its ninth shutout in a 0-0 tie with a strong Newton South club. Lauren Hoole had five saves for the Raiders (9-0-2) and "our whole defensive unit was outstanding" according to coach Anne Marinaro.

 Nicole Rogers pulled off an unusual double play, first scoring a goal, then moving into the net and making four saves to help Central Catholic down Minuteman 8-0. Nicolette Pelrine and Ashley Evangelista scored two goals each for the Raiders.

Central Catholic blew out Tewksbury 7-0. Gia O'Connor led the Raiders with a hat trick. Ashley Evangelista had two goals and a pair of assists to help keep Central undefeated.

Scoreless and satisfied

Central Catholic took on one of the state's best programs in Newburyport and battled to a scoreless deadlock at Lawrence Memorial Stadium. Junior goalie Lauren Hoole (10 saves) was phenomenal in the first half with several diving stops and sweeper Mariele Elie anchored a blanketing defensive effort in the second half. To date, Central has allowed only four goals in eight games with six shutouts.

Central posts fifth shutout

Central Catholic posted its fifth shutout of the season thanks to yesterday's 1-0 win over Dracut. "The outcome wasn't totally indicative of how the game went," admitted coach Anne Marinaro. "She [Dracut's Kelsey Harding] played really well de spite how many shots we had."
