Walsh gives Knights a puncher’s chance

The storybook ending to Brandon Walsh’s wild freshman season ends with an upset victory over three-time defending Cape Ann League Large champion Masconomet.

Short-handed Sachems fall to Masco

BOXFORD — Even if Pentucket were at full strength, Masconomet would have been hard to beat.

But the Sachems are suffering from nagging injuries.

Running back Dan Johanson had a team-high 52 yards but was noticeably limping all night. Two-way senior Chris Modlish picked up 101 receiving yards but left late in the game with a shoulder injury suffered at the end of a 70-yard pass-and-run.

On the one hand, upcoming opponents of the Fishermen may use footage of Friday night's game as proof that Gloucester may not be quite the juggernaut it was last year during its 13-0, Super Bowl championship season. The Fishermen were in an absolute battle with winless Masco (0-3) and held just a 14-13 lead with 10 minutes left in the contest. A far cry from 10 months ago, when the Fishermen steamrolled the Chieftains, 39-0, in the Division 2A semifinals.

Masconomet comes out hungry but Fishermen hold them off

7 Photos

GLOUCESTER— The Gloucester football team (2-0) found out pretty quickly that Masconomet was not the same team that they dominated 39-0 in the Division 2A semifinals last season. The Chieftains (0-3) came out hungry and gave the Fishermen all they could handle last night in their home opener at Newell Stadium.
