Belliard scores 4 times in Reggies rout of Brighton

WEST ANDOVER - In what proved to be a good tune-up for its matchup against Whittier on Thanksgiving, Greater Lawrence fixed some mistakes from last week in a 46-6 win over Brighton Saturday afternoon. The Reggies (7-3) took care of business last week against Madison Park, but allowed a few big plays resulting in points. Coach Tony Sarkis challenged his guys to eliminate those mistakes; a message that his team took to heart. Brighton (4-6) only had 110 yards of total offense, and Greater Lawrence allowed only two plays of 10 yards or more. "I'm proud of them," said Sarkis. "I put that challenge out to them after last game to get rid of our mistakes. I think we only had three penalties today. We want to continue to play the rest of the season with mistake-free-football." Greater Lawrence took the lead on its first play from scrimmage when Ojany Belliard bounced outside the tackles for a 54-yard touchdown run, his first of four TDs on the day, all coming in the first 16 minutes of the game. Belliard scored twice more in the first quarter, and quarterback Kyle Vasconcellos connected with wideout Aaron Goulet to complete a 30-point opening quarter outburst that put the game out of reach. Belliard entered the day 31 yards behind Pinkerton back Brett Dattilo for the area rushing lead. The junior added 164 more yards on the ground to bring his season total to 1,325 yards and 19 total TDs. The Reggies backs were able to get wide running lanes thanks to the dominant play of the offensive line. On the other side of the ball, the Reggies recorded eight tackles for loss. "I think we gel perfectly," said Sarkis. "They fight off the ball great, and they played a fantastic game today." Edgardo Garcia had six tackles and forced a fumble in slightly more than a half of action. "I just told him that that was the best game I've seen him play in his four years here," said Sarkis.  He had help from fellow linemen Ramon Montas, Jarred Garcia and Tyler MacDonald and David White added an interception.

Belliard rushes over the Gryphons

TYNGSBORO — Greater Lawrence won the early-season battle of undefeateds on Saturday afternoon when the Reggies took down conference rival Greater Lowell 44-26. Contributions came from both sides of the ball, as the Reggies (3-0) not only piled up well over 300 yards of total offense, but generated two forced fumbles on the defensive side.   “There are not many 3-0 teams left in the state,” said coach Tony Sarkis. “They’re in a unique situation and they need to appreciate every second of that record.”  The man of the day for Greater Lawrence was 5-6, 160-pound junior running back Ojany Belliard.  The shifty back was handed the football 21 times, and torched the Greater Lowell defense for 180 yards to go along with three TDs. Belliard refused to be taken down, at times carrying three defenders with him after he broke through the arms of multiple tacklers. “I’m feeling good out there. I just need to keep chugging and keep practicing,” said Belliard.   When asked if he did anything different today, Belliard said, “I just trusted my linemen more.  Last week I started popping my feet and I kept stopping, but today I just trusted my linemen and kept chugging for more and more yards.”  With 4:54 left in the first half, Nicholas Rossetti cut the lead to 14-12 for Greater Lowell when he barrelled his way into the endzone from the 1-yard line. However, Rene Mota took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the house to swing momentum back to the Reggies’ side. There was a similar situation in the third quarter, when quarterback Kyle Vasconcellos scampered 63 yards for the second of his two rushing touchdowns on the day. This coming only two plays after Greater Lowell had cut the lead to 22-18. “I’m very proud of these guys,” said Sarkis. “As a coach, if you see effort out there, never giving up and responding to adversity, you can’t be any more proud as a coach.” The Reggies host Northeast Saturday at 7 p.m.

Georgetown scores first, but Essex Tech rolls from there

HAWTHORNE - When senior quarterback Nick Calvani found Jimmy Sherman all alone in the left corner of the end zone for a 18-yard touchdown pass early Friday night, it was the start that the Georgetown football team was hoping for. What happened the rest of the evening, however, was not. North Shore Tech went on to score five unanswered touchdowns and pinned the Royals with a 34-7 loss on opening night. The Hawks tied it up late in the first quarter, driving 73 yards before Brendan Ahern scored on a 17-yard touchdown run. J.T. Reynolds added the extra point, and it stayed 7-7 until halftime. Georgetown had trouble all night long with bad snaps that Calvani had to chase down for big losses. On the opening drive of the third quarter a snap from center sailed over the quarterback's head on the first play for a 15-yard loss, and two plays later Calvani's pass was picked off by Essex Tech defensive back Jackson Leete. That set up the Hawks' go-ahead score as Lazzaro broke through the Georgetown defense for a 30-yard touchdown run to make it 13-7. The Hawks then scored on their next three possessions to put the game safely in the win column. The next scoring drive went 82 yards in six plays, with Lazzaro finishing it off with a 63-yard TD run and Leete rushing for the two point conversion. Georgetown hosts Greater Lawrence Friday at 7 p.m.
