Salem crushes Londonderry to avenge playoff loss

LONDONDERRY — With the memory of last year's controversial playoff finish still seared in their minds, the Salem football team exacted revenge on Londonderry, taking a five-score lead en route to a dominating 35-8 win. Charles Sibanda led the way for Salem with 69 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Nick Shumski, Corey Ortiz and Doug Maroun each had touchdowns to help the Blue Devils pull away. "Our kids came out and played hard and it continued right through the third quarter," said Salem coach Rob Pike. "Londonderry is a good team and we didn't want to leave any doubt. So it was good to see our kids stay focused and play hard." Sibanda started things off with a 3-yard touchdown run with 4:20 to play in the first quarter, and in the second quarter, Shumski and Sibanda scored from 5 and 1 yards out within two minutes of each other to make it 21-0. Coming out of the halftime break, Corey Ortiz rushed for a 14-yard touchdown to make it 28-0, and then with 3:17 to play in the third, Doug Maroun finished things off with a 9-yard rush. Londonderry got on the board late in the fourth with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jake Stevens to Cameron McDonald. Salem improves to 7-2 and will be at Exeter in the first round of the playoffs next Saturday, while Londonderry falls to 2-6.

Wiedenfeld scores 3 TDs as Londonderry beats Portsmouth

David Wiedenfeld scored three touchdowns to help lead Londonderry football past Portsmouth 30-20 on Friday to break a three-game losing streak.
Portsmouth grabbed an early lead after quarterback Cody Graham hit Shon Parham for a 5-yard touchdown pass, and after Londonderry responded with a 5-yard Wiedenfeld touchdown run, Portsmouth came right back with a 62-yard touchdown pass from Christian Peete to Jake Lorenz to make it 12-7 after one.
Londonderry retook the lead in the second on a 1-yard rush by Wiedenfeld, and about a minute later the Lancers extended their lead after Peter Navarro scored on a 13-yard touchdown run to make it 21-12 going into halftime.
Portsmouth tied the score at 21-21 in the third after Peete hit Graham for a 24-yard touchdown pass, but in the fourth the Lancers retook the lead for good after Wiedenfeld scored his third TD on a 2-yard run. Nick Donnelly kicked a 29-yard field goal to round out the scoring.
Wiedenfeld finished with seven catches for 108 yards receiving to go along with his 44 yards rushing, and Jake Stevens led the Lancers on the ground with 117 yards rushing on 23 carries.
Londonderry will host Merrimack next Friday at 7 p.m.

Pinkerton beats Londonderry for 18th straight time

DERRY  — The Lancers from Londonderry arrived unfashionably late — waiting until just before the school bands hooked up for the Star Spangled Banner before showing up on the Pinkerton Field.

The Astros controlled the early going then ran away with a 35-20 win. It was Pinkerton's 18th consecutive victory over its border rival. The Lancers' last win in the rivalry was in 2001.

"I'm proud that we answered the bell against a team that really, truly wanted to take it to us," Pinkerton coach Brian O'Reilly said after his Astros won their fourth consecutive game to open the season. "Waiting until just before the game to show up and then fake punts, on-side kicks, hook-and-ladder (passes) ... they gave us everything we had, and we needed to be able to answer to that type of situation.

"I'm not going to quibble over a 35-20 game, but I would have liked to have stopped them on that last score and not let them drive down the field."

Spending the entire first quarter on the Londonderry side of the 50, the undefeated Astros first shook off a stout Lancer defense that stymied their first two possessions before opening a 21-point lead midway through the second quarter.

James Tulley sparked the offense with a 5-yard run late in the opening stanza before Ryan Albrecht hooked up with sophomore receiver Kayden Baillargeon on a 49-yard pass. Brett Dattilo followed with a 73-yard burst for the 21-0 lead with 5:57 left untill halftime.

Baillargeon's catch came one play after the Astros stopped Londonderry on a fourth-and-1, and Dattilo's run came three plays after a fourth-and-7 stop at the Pinkerton 14.

"It's our rivalry game, but we try to take it game by game," said Albrecht, who had his second straight strong outing, completing three of his six passes for 96 yards. "I thought (Londonderry showing up late) was disrespectful not to warmup before playing our team. It provided a little fire."

Londonderry (1-3) cut the deficit with a 31-yard Jake Stevens' run before intermission, but the Astros reclaimed a 21-point lead when Baillargeon recovered a Tulley fumble in the end zone.

"I'm proud we took care of the offensive line of scrimmage in the second half," O'Reilly said. The Lancers received touchdowns from Cam Reddy on an 8-yard pass from David Wiedenfeld and Nick Donnelly hauled in a 15-yarder from Stevens in the fourth. But those scores were offset by a 28-yard Nick Coombs run for Pinkerton with 10 minutes left in the fourth.

"I just didn't want my guys to look over and see Pinkerton," Londonderry's second-year coach Jimmy Lauzon said of performing pregame warm-ups at home before the bus trip. "Sometimes (the Astros) win games just because of the jerseys they wear. We wanted to focus on how we do things. They have a mental hold on us at this point, and have for the past (17) years."

Londonderry stopped on final play, loses to Exeter

Despite three touchdowns by David Wiedenfeld, Londonderry lost to Exeter 28-20 in a game that came down to the final play.

Down by eight with five seconds to play, Londonderry (1-2) had the ball at the Exeter (3-0) seven with one last chance to tie the game. The Lancers had managed to pick apart the Blue Hawks defense throughout the final drive, but when the chips were down, the Hawks held firm and forced an incompletion on the prospective game-tying throw.
