Dube throws one-hit shutout

Shannon Dube tossed a one-hit shutout to lead Whittier to a 3-0 victory over Haverhill in girls softball. Dube went all seven innings, striking out eight and walking two.  The only hit she surrendered came in the seventh.

Sweet revenge

Haverhill's softball team lost a heartbreaker to Andover earlier in the year, but a 10-run second inning provided a cuahion in the rematch and provided for a 15-8 victory. Samantha Streletski paced the offense with three hits and five RBIs and freshman Kailey Suplinskas allowed only three hits to pick up the win.

Okun starts, delivers

Andover junior Samantha Okun, playing as a designated hitter, had a three-run triple and had the pivotal hit in the top of the seventh with a two-run double as the Warriors rallied past Haverhill 12-11 for their first win of the season. Irena Kushner added three hits and two RBIs and Abby Taylor picked up the win with two innings of relief. Beth Strong continued to hit the ball hard for Haverhill.

Haverhill's Yeo struck by line drive

Haverhill softball pitcher Sammie Yeo was struck in the forehead by a line drive in the first inning of the Hillies' 7-1 loss to Newburport.

"She was in good spirits when I visited her in the hospital after the game," said Hillies coach Andy Reusch. "But it was the hardest I have ever seen a softball hit, and I have been coaching for a long time. She didn't have a chance to get out of the way."
