No. 13 Methuen trailed by just a goal after one period, but could get no closer and fell to No. 4 Newburyport 7-1 in the Division 2 North first round.

McGovern nets the equalizer and the game-winner

Senior Brad McGovern scored two third-period goals to pull Haverhill from a one-goal deficit into a 2-1 win over Methuen. McGovern scored the game-tying goal on a penalty shot in the opening minute of the third period then netted the game-winner with 6:12 to play.

Methuen qualifies!

 

Methuen's hockey team, which was 5-12-3 last year and hadn't qualified for the state tournament in 10 years (since going 10-9-2 in 1999-2000), advanced yesterday with a 5-3 victory over Agawam. Playing well for the Rangers (8-6-4), were senior Pat Luce, who had a goal and three assists, and senior defenseman Pat Fleming.

Twelve Methuen hockey players got on the scoresheet in a runaway 8-4 victory over Newton South. Senior Mike Lussier and freshman Matt Bauchman led the way with a pair of goals apiece while freshman T.J. Gannon pitched in an assist and quality defense in his first varsity game on the back line.

Freshman Matt Bauchman netted his ninth goal of the year, but it wasn't nearly enough in Methuen's 4-1 loss to Lincoln-Sudbury. Pat Fleming and Colin Trainor played well on defense for the 5-5-3 Rangers.
