GLOUCESTER | Throughout the summer and the preseason, the Gloucester High School football team heard all the rumors that they would be the team to beat in the Northeastern Conference this fall.

The Fishermen had their first real chance to validate those rumors last night in front of a packed house at Gloucester's Newell Stadium in the season opener against two-time defending NEC champion Winthrop.

Gloucester set to gain redemption from Vikings

Tonight will be a strong indicator of whether or not there is going to be a changing of the guard in Northeastern Conference football this fall.

Over the past two years, Winthrop has been the premier team in the NEC, capturing conference crowns in 2005 and 2006. Last year's magical season featured a perfect 13-0 record and a Division 2A Super Bowl win.

Fishermen look strong in first scrimmage

GLOUCESTER | People and Plays.

That's what Gloucester football head coach Paul Ingram was looking to see in yesterday's scrimmage against Masconomet at Newell Stadium in Gloucester.

The scrimmage marked the Fishermen's first game situation of the season. They will play their second scrimmage on Saturday in Tewksbury, before playing their regular-season opener on Sept. 7 at home against defending Northeastern Conference champion Winthrop.
