The Blue Devils got 10 excellent innings of pitching from Nora Galvin, Dominique Heres and Nicole Gubellini, but fourth-ranked Dover was able to push the winning run across in the bottom of the 10th to drop No. 5 Salem, 2-1, in the Class L semifinals. Steph Cabral had a hit and scored the lone Salem run from the leadoff spot.

Fantastic freshmen

Freshmen Sarah Frahm (3 for 5, two RBIs, two runs), Steph Long (2 for 4, two RBIs, one run) and Nicole Gubellini (one inning, two strikeouts) were pivotal in Salem's 13-1 drubbing of Winnacunnet. Unusual result

Salem and Concord usually engage in a pitching duel in softball, but that was not the case yesterday in a 9-6 Concord victory.

"The last time we gave up that many runs was in the 1994 championship game," said Salem coach Harold Sachs. "If someone had told me we'd score six runs on Concord and lose, I wouldn't have believed it."

Pitcher vs. pitcher

Salem pitcher Nora Galvin pitched a superb game and did all she could to help her own cause, but Alvirne freshman Taylor Carbone was just a tab superior in a 1-0 victory. Galvin struck out 10 and allowed just one hit, but that was a long home run by Carbone in the bottom of the sixth. Carbone, meanwhile, struck out 12 and allowed only three hits — all by Galvin.

Perfection foiled

Salem pitcher Nora Galvin took a perfect game into the seventh, but an error and a bloop single ruined her bid in a 6-1 win at Manchester Memorial. She finished with seven strikeouts and no walks. Erica Depinto broke the game open in the fourth with a two-run double.

Salem is Galvin-ized

Three innings of no-hit, eight-strikeout relief from Nora Galvin paired nicely with Salem's penchant for big offensive innings in a 9-2 victory over Bishop Guertin. Galvin faced the minimum in getting the victory as the Blue Devils (5-1) struck for seven runs in the tie-breaking sixth inning. Julia Gray continued her strong hitting with a pair of safeties including a two-run single in the sixth. Starting pitcher Valerie Bauer also fanned eight in four innings of work.
