Londonderry outlasts Astros in 16

LONDONDERRY  — Two pitchers proved slightly better than one yesterday afternoon and evening.

But only barely.

And it took 16 innings of dramatic, tension-filled softball to prove it as Londonderry outlasted Pinkerton and senior pitcher Cara Chooljian in a classic three-hour Class L quarterfinal game.

Turnaround continues

The Pinkerton softball team (15-5), which failed to even make the tournament last year, continued its turnaround season with a 5-0 win over Winnacunnet in the first round of the Class L tournament yesterday. Cara Chooljian led the way, striking out nine while scattering five hits and helping her own cause with a key two-run double.

Cara Chooljian dominated Alvirne, striking out 15 in a three-hitter with one walk to lift Pinkerton to a 3-0 win.

Brittany Gentile and Alison Deleo each had a hit and drove in a run.

Pinkerton wins it in extra innings

Freshman Kasey Marraffa barely beat the throw from the outfield in the bottom of the ninth as Pinkerton beat Manchester Central 7-6 on Katie Miller's walk-off single. Shannon Murphy had a home run and Cara Chooljian threw a complete game and struck out 12.

Slump snapped

Led by Cara Chooljian's 12-strikeout, four-hit gem, Pinkerton's softball team (11-4) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over Bishop Guertin. Chooljian helped her own cause with two hits and two RBIs and Katie Miller had two hits, an RBI and scored twice.

Soaring Astros

Pinkerton's softball team continued its turnaround season with a huge 5-3 win over archrival Londonderry. The Astros, now 9-2, rapped out 10 hits led by red-hot Shannon Doherty, and received a sparkling two-hitter from Cara Chooljian, who gave up just one earned run. Doherty, who is hitting over .400, was 2 for 2 with a solo home run in the sixth and had two RBIs and two runs scored.

Doherty doubles drive 'Stros

Shannon Doherty doubled twice in a perfect 3-for-3 effort from the plate, driving in three and scoring twice, as Pinkerton crushed Manchester West, 13-0, in five innings. Winning pitcher Cara Chooljian also helped her own cause, collecting two hits and scoring a run.

From JVs to victory

Kelsey Quinn came up from the JV squad and kicked off a game-winning, two-out rally as Pinkerton edged Merrimack, 4-2. Quinn, called up due to illnesses, had a single and scored the deciding run on Shannon Murphy's double. Reliever Cara Chooljian (5-1) squelched a two-on, two-out rally with help from second baseman Aimee Walters, who hustled to grab a dying pop-up on the left side of the bag for the game's final out.

Cara the closer

For the second time this year, Pinkerton senior Cara Chooljian entered the game in relief and was plenty effective, striking out nine and allowing just one hit over four innings in a 2-1 win over Trinity. For good measure, Chooljian added the game-winning hit in the sixth.
