Iwanicki, Prep finish on top

 

METHUEN — St. John's Prep's Rawson Iwanicki of Andover is one very confident freshman, so much so that some might call him cocky.

But that would be a mistake because Iwanicki, as he showed Saturday at the Division 1 North sectional, has good reason to be confident. By defeating Lawrence's talented John Vasquez 8-3 in the finals, Iwanicki improved to his season record to a sterling 45-2.

Central wins D2 title again

 

 

NORTH ANDOVER — This is becoming quite an enjoyable tradition for the Central Catholic wrestling team.

Carbone's big win

 

North Andover's wrestling team lost both ends of a double dual meet at St. John's Prep but 195-pounder Jack Carbone was 2-0 and had a big pin over highly-regarded Owen Gaffny of the Prep and Ethan Ford had two pins at 132, including one over the Prep's Quinn Alexander of North Andover.

An 'Angel' for Lancers

 

 Sophomore Angel Miranda had a pin at 170 pounds to highlight Lawrence's 43-18 victory over North Andover. Also, John Vasquez remained unbeaten at 145 for the Lancers with a first-period pin.

Ethan Ford had three pins Saturday at 132 pounds as North Andover won one of three meets in a quad at Dracut. Sam Mountain also had a big day, going 3-0 with two pins.

Carbone highlights Knights

 

North Andover went 2-2 in a dual-meet tourney at Reading and had some highlights as well. Jack Carbone was 4-0 with four pins at 195 to improve to 26-5 on the year, sophomore Jack Dalton was 3-0 at 138 for his best day of the season and Ethan Ford was 3-0 at 132.

Pallaria named OW, Owls finish 2nd in Rhode Island

 

Timberlane junior Nick Pallaria is on top of his game and senior teammate Chris Lund seems to be completely healthy again.

Those were two takeaways Saturday from the John Gorman Invitational in Cumberland, R.I. as the Owls finished second to Simsbury in a talent-laden field. Timberlane had 10 placers and 221.5 points to fall just shy of Simsbury (228).

Whittier rolls on

 

Surprising Whittier Tech won three more meets, including a 49-24 decision over North Andover for its second in over an MVC school in three days, to improve to 13-1. Anthony Moran was 3-0 at 170 and freshman Jeremy Rousseau won two more matches at 220 abd was one of seven Wildcats who were unbeaten on the day.

Ford finishes 2nd

 

North Andover captain Ethan Ford finally met his match in the finals Saturday at the Marshfield Tournament.

Ford surged to the 132-pound finals but then had to settle for second after losing to Hingham's tough Kaya Bogle, 9-2. Other placers for the Knights were Cam Watson, who was fifth at 160, and Jack Carbone, who was seventh at 195.

Central's depth prevails

 

Central Catholic was highly regarded in the preseason and Saturday the Raiders showed just why by capturing the Sons of Italy crown in Wilmington.

The Raiders, who crowned four champions, finished with 174 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Brookline (149) and defending champion Haverhill (147).
