Methuen needed a win to earn a spot in the state tournament but fell short, 2-1, to Chelmsford. Kim Marino knotted things at 1-1 midway through the second half, but with Methuen gambling in a bid for the win, the Lions grabbed the victory.

Freshmen keep Methuen's hopes alive

Knotted at 1-1 at the close of the first half, Methuen needed someone to step up to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Well, two people accepted the challenge, both of them freshmen. Kristy Erickson scored the winner, and Alex Levesque netted two of her three goals in the second half for a little added insurance.

Tough break

Methuen thought it had a hard-earned tie with Billerica. However, Jamie Newell's header off the post with only 20 seconds remaining in the game, which appeared to have crossed the goal line, was called back by the referee. As a result, the Rangers lost 1-0.

  Frustrating lossMethuen's girls soccer team did all but win yesterday in a 1-0 loss to Tewksbury. The Rangers outshot Tewksbury 8-2 and had two apparent goals nullified. This was despite missing leading scorer Karen Lima,who was out sick.

Ashley Evangelista scored and assisted on two others as Central Catholic defeated Methuen, 4-0. Kristen Wilson, Jill Lane and Gia O'Connor also scored for the Raiders (4-0). Lauren Hoole made five saves to record the win in net.
