Knight advance

The North Andover boys tennis team made quick work of Medford in the Division 2 North first round, winning 5-0. Matt Whidden picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles, and Matt Feng and Luke DePolito had a 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles for the No. 8-seed Knights, who will host No. 16 Wakefield Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Warriors upset top-seeded Somerville, 3-2.

Perennial MVC Division 1 champion Andover blanked North Andover, 5-0, to finish the regular season at 14-1 and 12-0 in the MVC. Rilly O'Brien and Avi Jonarthanan won at first and second singles, respectively.

Heavyweight battle

The Andover boys tennis team handed fellow power North Andover its first loss of the season, winning 4-1. The Warriors' second doubles team of Justin Gu and Alex Earl won a hard-fought match, 6-3, 6-3. But the match of the day came at third singles, where North Andover's Matt Whidden came back to win a marathon against Andover's Avi Jonarthanen, 4-6, 7-6, 10-5.

No. 1 rally

 

Playing in the No. 1 slot, North Andover senior Paul Pfordresser rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to prevail 7-5 to key North Andover's season-opening 3-2 win over Central Catholic. Matt Whidden was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at third singles for the Knights, who were 14-2 last year. Impressive freshman Zach Channen was a 6-4, 6-4 winner for Central at No. 2 singles.
