Pair of tricks

Both Cassidy Gruning and Julia Masotta scored hat tricks to lead the No. 3 Methuen-Tewksbury girls hockey team to a 6-2 win over Westford in the first round of the Division 1 tournament. The Red Rangers (19-1-1) will play either No. 6 St. Mary's or No. 11 Peabody-Lynnfield-North Reading in the quarterfinals (date and time TBA).

Sjostedt saves day

Down 3-1 into heading into the third, Methuen-Tewksbury rallied and beat Shrewsbury, 4-3, on a goal by defenseman Madi Sjostedt with 34 seconds left. Carolyn Curley's sweet pass set up the game winner. Cassidy Gruning had the hat trick for the Red Rangers, who will play in the Newburyport Bank Classic title game Thursday at 7 p.m.

Freshman Kylie Winsor had a day to remember, scoring her first varsity goal to help the Methuen-Tewksbury girls hockey team beat Acton-Boxboro, 5-0. The win clinched the second straight MVC/DCL Large championship for the Red Rangers (16-1-1).

The Methuen-Tewksbury girls hockey team never led until under five minutes remaining when Cassidy Gruning sniped her second goal of the game to lift the Red Rangers to a 4-3 comeback win over Shrewsbury. M-T trailed 3-1 in the second period before Carolyn Curley and Julia Masotta netted goals to equalize.

Great Wall of D'Urso

Andover's Sean D'Urso continuted her fabulous start to the season with a 22-save performance in a 3-0 win over Methuen-Tewksbury, recording her fourth straight shutout to start the year. Defensively, it was Emily Wagner and Sara Carleo, who also scored a goal, who got the job of shutting down Red Rangers' top goal-scorer Julia Masotta.
