Newburyport's Emilie DeKanter and Sophie Page had two of the best matches in the local area this year, both going the distance in three-hour, three-set thrillers to help the Clippers win 4-1. DeKanter rallied from an early deficit to win her No. 1 singles match 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Page shook off a tough second set to win her No. 2 singles match 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

Port bounces back

Newburyport girls tennis suffered its first loss of the year to state power Marblehead on Thursday night, dropping a close 3-2 decision, but bounced back in a big way to beat Ipswich 5-0 on Friday. Senior Grace Ellsworth picked up her first varsity win, teaming with Anna Hickman at second doubles to win 6-1, 6-1, and Emma Filipancic moved up to third singles to win 6-3, 6-2.

Dominant again

Newburyport girls tennis blanked Ipswich 5-0 on Thursday, improving to a perfect 5-0 on the season while once again crushing the opposing players in every match. Emilie DeKanter and the team of Meredith Vartabedian and Emma Filipancic won their matches at first singles and first doubles 6-0, 6-0, and Sophie Page (6-1, 6-0), River Sava (6-0, 6-2) and Molly Page and Lindsay Kerns (6-0, 6-1) were almost perfect as well.

DeKanter wins CAL Open title

Newburyport's Emilie DeKanter won the CAL Open first singles title after coming from behind to beat Hamilton-Wenham's Ella Provost 8-6. She also beat two others on the day to lead Newburyport to a second place team finish. The second doubles team of Lilly Page and Audra Greenblott also made a run to the championship match, winning their first two matches before falling to a tough team from Lynnfield.

Port still perfect

Newburyport girls tennis remained perfect on the year, beating Rockport 5-0 to improve to 3-0 on the season. River Sava stepped up to third singles and won 6-0, 6-0, and Anna Hickman entered the lineup to team with Molly Page to win 6-1, 6-0 at second doubles. Newburyport has now won all three of its meets 5-0 and has yet to drop a single set on the season.

Port shuts out Beverly

Newburyport girls tennis won its opener in a rout on Thursday, beating Beverly 5-0 on the road. Emilie DeKanter dominated at first singles to win 6-0, 6-0, Sophie Page and Ann DeKanter both won easily at second and third singles, and the doubles pairs of Meredith Vartabedian and Emma Filipancic, as well as River Sava and Molly Page, won in straight sets at doubles too.
