Puzzo saves Astros in Tuscan tie

SALEM — In an out-of-state matchup in the inaugural game of the 16th annual Tuscan Blue Devil Classic, Pinkerton escaped with a 1-1 tie against Scarborough.
Scarborough came into the contest sporting a 5-0-0 record, good enough for first place in Maine’s Class A South Division.
On a day where the Astros were outshot 35-13 at the Salem Icenter, they needed (and received) heroics in net to avoid a loss.
With under two minutes remaining in regulation, Pinkerton goaltender Jordan Puzzo somehow found the puck under a scrum of bodies in front of the net after a sprawling pad save. The save was one of Puzzo’s 34 that he recorded on the day, and ensured the game would go into overtime.
“He’s our senior goalie,” said Pinkerton head coach Ryan Piper. “He played fantastic. He saw a lot of rubber, and that’s been consistent of our season so far. We have a difficult time right now getting it out of our own end, and (Puzzo) is definitely keeping us in there.”
Pinkerton scored late in the first period when Mike Francis rocketed a slap shot past Ross LeBlond.
Scarborough answered late in the second period on a power play when Kyle Jacques snuck one past the leg of Puzzo. Puzzo had previously made a diving blocker save followed by a pad save, but could not get to the puck in time.
