Phillips Academy holds tough, downs Exeter

EXETER — After seeing an early 14-point lead slip away, Phillips Academy would not be denied against its archrivals.

The Big Blue bounced back with two fourth quarter touchdowns to take charge, and senior Robert Jones intercepted a pass to all but clinch Phillip Andover's 29-14 victory over historic foe Phillips Exeter in their storied rivalry that began in 1878.

Whalen shines in Phillips loss

 ANDOVER — Matt Whalen caught two touchdown passes from Robert Jones but Worcester Academy was too much and pinned a 40-15 loss on Phillips Andover.

For the Big Blue, sophomore linebacker Adam Cohen was all over the field with 16 tackles and a sack and co-captains John Simourian of Andover (11) and Jumaane Ford (10) also had double-digit tackles.

Phillips loses defensive struggle

ANDOVER — Jim Turner scored on a 1-yard run midway through the fourth quarter and that was the difference as unbeaten Suffield topped Phillips 7-0. The Big Blue (3-2) drove deep into Tiger territory but couldn't cash in. "I'm proud of the kids. This team beat us 35-0 last year," said Phillips coach Leon Modeste. There were plenty of defensive stalwarts for the hosts. John Simourian had 7 tackles, James Antoine notched 6 tackles and a sack, Joe Scibelli had 6 tackles and Adam Cohen contributed 6 tackles and a sack. Phillips at Deerfield, Saturday 3 p.m.

Jones does it all, leads Phillips to win

ASHBURNHAM — Robert Jones three for 249 yards and two touchdowns and added 74 yards and two more scores on the ground to pace Phillips in a 32-22 victory over Cushing Academy.

"We played sloppy in the first half," said Phillips coach Leon Modeste. "But we played much better in the second half. Our defense did a great job of keeping us in it until the offense came around."

Phillips falls to powerhouse Choate

Phillips held high-powered Choate to just a single score in the first half, but the Wild Boars scored three times in the third and pulled away for a 27-15 victory.

"It's been a while since a team has held Choate to just one score in the first half," said Big Blue coach Leon Modeste. "So we did well. I am very proud of the way our kids played today."

Andover's Belluche locks down Phillips victory

 With Phillips leading by a single score late in the fourth quarter, Andover's Jack Belluche pinned Kent School deep in their own territory with a perfect punt, then clinched the victory with his second interception of the day in the final seconds as the Big Blue held on for a 14-11 victory.

Phillips' Jones accounts for 7 TDs

ANDOVER - Robert Jones had a brilliant debut as Phillips opened the season with a 49-35 win over Loomis Chaffee.

Jones, a post-grad out of Wayland (Mass.) High, carried 11 times for 125 yards and three scores and complete 13 of 16 passes for 252 yards and four scores.
