Methuen caps perfect season with win over Prep in dual meet state final

LOWELL — Methuen made perfection seem quite easy yesterday at the Division 1 dual-meet championships.

The Rangers completed an unblemished 20-0 season in rousing fashion, first by defeating Springfield Central 33-22 in the semifinals before disposing of nearby rival St. John's Prep 36-20 for the state championship.

Champs again

 

  St. John's Prep's wrestling team blasted Malden Catholic 59-3 to wrap up its 14th straight Catholic Conference title. Among the eight wrestlers who had pins for the Eagles (29-1), who have won 59 straight league meets, was 170-pounder David Kou of Andover.

Prep on roll

 

The St. John's Prep wrestling team swept a quad, which included big wins over good Shawsheen (43-15) and West Springfield  (37-21) teams to improve to 27-1. North Andover freshman Ian Butterbrodt was 3-0 on the day at 182 and is now 30-1 on the year.

Strong debut

 

In his first action since recovering from a concussion suffered in football, Haverhill senior Parris Williams went 3-0 with three pins in a multi-team wrestling meet at Pentucket.

Methuen tuned up for tomorrow's showdown at North Andover by crushing St. John's of Shrewsbury 62-6. Cuong Nguyen looked impressive at 106 with a second-period pin and both Giovanni Rivera (170) and Scott DelRossi (182) had strong performances.
