LYNN — Yamarco Guzman opened the season as Greater Lawrence’s third string quarterback and, in fact, remains listed as a wide receiver on the roster.

But yesterday, in his first varsity start at quarterback, the senior looked plenty at home.

“After the last touchdown I was just laughing on the inside,” said Guzman. “I knew I made (late teammate) Max (Montanez) and his family proud.”

Guzman rushed for three touchdowns on just eight carries and helped lead a dominant defense as the Reggies crushed previously-undefeated Lynn Tech 34-0 yesterday morning.

“Yamarco, our backup quarterback, had a stellar game,” said Greater Lawrence coach Tony Sarkis. “With him settling into the position, we can be even more dangerous.”

Guzman admitted that his first score of the game, a 32-yard run up the middle, happened by mistake on a broken play.

“It was a fumble to be honest,” said Guzman, who had just one score going into the day. “I picked it up and coach always says get what you can and I did. It felt great.”

He added a second touchdown on a 4-yard plunge on the last play of the third, and closed out the scoring with a beautiful bootleg left that faked out the entire defense.

He finished the day with eight carries for 88 yards, and had to attempt just one pass with the game in hand and the wind whipping around Manning Field.

“He is really an athlete playing quarterback,” said Sarkis. “He can throw, he can run those sneaks and bootlegs and he can make plays.”

The Reggies accumulated 363 yards rushing on 51 attempts. They were led by area rushing leader Cristian Rivera (127 yards, TD), Guzman, fullback John Augusta (66 yards, TD) and Ryan Caredeo (64 yards).

“We know that as long as we are making the right plays we are very dangerous,” said Augusta. “When we didn’t score, we stopped ourselves.”

The Reggies were just as dominant on defense, allowing just 37 yards of total offense, including just 11 on the ground on 17 attempts.

Lynn Tech had averaged 31.4 points per game going into yesterday.

“All we heard all week was they were 5-0 and their offense was unstoppable,” said Augusta. “We wanted to give them their first loss, and we love the shutout. That’s our goal.”
